Tanya

Do not rely on time.
It recedes unendingly--
There is less of it now, even, than there was when you began to read this poem;
The grave yawns.
Do not rely on time.

Do not believe in your own wits,
Or that yours are sharper, somehow, than others'.
Once, you believed that lost teeth were boughten by fairies,
And that only old people died.
Do not believe in your own wits.

Religion, causes, various grand undertakings--
Do not live for these,
They come and go.
Do not live for fame or wealth--
Every third chump on the street is famous, wealthy, and echoingly vacant and hollow.

Only these things matter-
Tanya,
Tanya's thighs,
Tanya's face,
Tanya's breasts
and Tanya's pleased smile.

Take my advice--
Sell everything,
Compromise everything,
Forget position, principles, pride--
What good do they do you?

Find Tanya at the place they call
La Maison de L'oiseau Vert.
Kill or betray anyone who gets in your way.

Leave now--
The things that matter matter only for such a short time.
Go to her,
She is waiting.

I see you have your priorities in order. Kudos. Not many people are able to identify what's of real value in this world.

  6. "The grave yawns." Brilliant line.

Yes, we are but a speck of sand on a huge beach...And all the things we fret about don't matter one bit

(and EVERYTHING sounds better in French)

  7. I really loved this. It reminded me of an eerie ghost story I read years ago. I wish I could remember what it was.

  8. Yeah, you really turned this in an unexpected direction halfway through. I thought you were talking TO Tanya, not that she was actually the meaning of life.

"Do not believe in your own wits,
Or that yours are sharper, somehow, than others'.
Once, you believed that lost teeth were boughten by fairies" ... I like this. Good advice. And fairies are always a nice touch.

    "Take my advice--
    Sell everything,
    Compromise everything,
Forget position, principles, pride--What good do they do you?" ... You make it sound like our "good" is the only thing that matters. :) That is why poetry is not the real world. But boy do I love this poem and all the freedom and "throw caution to the wind" -ness it represents. Another amazing piece, Shay. I can just feel the urgency and longing in those last couple of stanzas, as if you are actually Tanya speaking in the third person. Excellent.

  10. Always good to get your priorities straight, though I think a case could be made that love is just another grand cause--but perhaps Tanya is something more elusive and also more specific than that. The second stanza here totally bowls me over--and the entire poem reverberates with the intensity of its inner logic.

  12. Sometimes it is as simple as this... Find your joy, pursue your joy.

  13. Shay, is it a green birdhouse? Or a house for a green bird? ... Or a green house for a green bird? ;)

    Isn't this one beautiful ...
