Observations on The Construction of The Human Ear

Every ear is different, as unique as fingerprints,
and that is why the world
can speak in a million voices
and to each in her own particular language.

Same-same, the trick is to listen
to what's coming from every direction and to make
nonsense into music;
foolishness into poetry.

If you can do that, the world will not seem so mean, so ugly,
but will, instead, whisper in your ear like a dream of the Divine.

  1. I read recently that the outer ear of humans is obsolete to our physiology, a leftover that evolution hasn't got rid of yet... However, reading your poem has convinced me otherwise.

  2. And so simply you let us into the secret of why we write, why we read, perhaps even why we are--makers are so often remakers, and as the saw goes, it's a dirty job but someone has to do it--here you make it as refreshing and powerful as if one suddenly woke up able to pull flowers out from behind one's ears. Lovely little package,Shay, wherefrom the best things come.

  3. OH! To the M & F & G!

    Your best EVER (in an evolutionary way). A Hint of, breath of, a fresh voice with great timbre. Listening is the message of the day from many directions and you saying it the richest! I'm enraptured and copying this one to read again and again. Thanks for your visits/comments of late

  5. I especially loved the last two lines. AND Sandy Denny? That's like a huge cherry on top...

  7. I'm so glad you posted that picture. Those labels are poetry. Beautiful words.

    "If you can do that, the world will not seem so mean, so ugly,
    but will, instead, whisper in your ear like a dream of the Divine." ... I've got to figure out how to do that, then. Obviously I'm still stuck on the nonsense, and therefore, the mean and ugly. I need to turn this around somehow. Haiku, maybe? :)
