do these leaves deceive?
what is green
but a word for a thing
we see a certain way
inside our skulls where no green thing grows?
here is my yellow dress.
my yellow hair.
and yellow fields stretching flat and far.
inside, my reasons.
outside, the sheltering trees,
our house in their lee.
also, your face, the flickering planets, and stars.
i want you, but i want the wind.
you say i deceive,
but what is wanting
but a word for a thing
for which there is really no word at all?
does light lie?
here is the yellow sunflower
and the yellow night-window
but they never
called themselves those things.
here is my silver ring and my yellow ticket--
i love your face, even though you don't believe
and wish me damned and dead because i go.

"i want you, but i want the wind" perfect. P
ReplyDeleteI love all the yellow. And "I want you but I want the wind." Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteinside, my reasons ~~ three words that speak volumes. This is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI love all the questions, movement of thought and yes wanting the wind! Your poem is even more gorgeous in depth, longing, and beauty than the image itself. I love this Shay!
ReplyDeleteMesmerizing. I feel like she'd be a captivating person to know.
ReplyDeleteHow we interpret words and what we see - love this trail of thought.
ReplyDeletei enjoyed walking this existentially perceived yellow brick road with you (i'm looking for a brain, sounds like you're looking for a heart) all your imagery blends well in this, and it has both a very lonesome feel (i want you, but i want the wind) and a binding (your face, the flickering planets, and stars.) i like that contrast. there's some emotional ping-pong in there. as always, very well written shay
ReplyDeleteIn your labels was "Would I Lie to You?" I guess you could have had Annie Lennox wailing, instead of Linda Ronstadt sweetly singing...
ReplyDeleteI loved the line "yellow fields stretching flat and far."
A vulnerable blend of lexicography and longing.
ReplyDeleteThe longing is felt but, i wonder about wanting? Wanting and needing sometimes are not the same. Wanting the wind which is wild and untamed. This is a deeply layered piece that takes the reader in many directions, much like the wind. A thought provoking piece of poetry. Done in your signature style;)
ReplyDeleteNow i have the stones song looping in my head
‘You can’t alway get what you want’
"does light lie?"
ReplyDeleteThe existential question: do we really see, what do we really feel?
A poem to return to...
There are two things that stand out for me in this poem. The most obvious is the use of color, the repetition of yellow, faceting and changing what it covers, what it is to mimic feeling perhaps, and life itself. Second is the direct and pared down narrative voice, which speaks vibrantly and clearly and minces no words. And finally the overall arching feeling I'm left with is the questioning. What exactly is the difference between a lie and a name given by an outsider, what ever is capturable in the Other? Beautiful, thoughtful and deeply powerful poem, Shay.
ReplyDeleteThis is quite sad, Shay. It's not just unrequited love... It's much darker... A powerful piece, this.

This is beautiful, Shay. You've encapsulated the feeling of transience that comes with emotions, the seasons, the light throughout the day and time. And like the changing light, it makes me think of how one's truth can change moment by moment when your heart's like the wind. I also totally second Phillip's comment above, he put it so much better <3
