Philomela of the Bungalows

I feel forsaken
like a rolled newspaper in the rain.

Is that You? in the window box?
Is that You? magnificent in a woken engine?

I don't mean to be sullen,
a crushed flower with a brave yellow bloom--

I'm a vine growing in through the window
of your abandoned holy room.

Oh honey. My fingers flat upon
your smooth chest made of smoke,

I am rain falling ever further from her cloud.
Call me back---use your voice of spade-shaped leaves.

I will come, across the lawns and waters
to kneel at your feet
and sing.

Without Even the Grace to Blush

Humble is the sparrow
on the sill at the end of the year.
Sorry is the miller
who has no barley for the beer.

Vain are the dolls
wrapped with a bow on the box.
Red is the rooster
who rides in the jaws of the fox.

Soft is the ivy
where the robin who died lies so still.
Hard is hangman
who works in the dawn's bitter chill.

Sweet are the tulips
elegant in spring, in summer so terse.
So pale your dying love
as a corporal folded in a burse.

A corporal is a folded linen cloth upon which the Host and chalice are placed during the celebration of Mass. The corporal is carried in a container called a burse for reasons of reverence.

A Conversation About a Dog

"I see that I'm too late," I said

"You don't see a damn thing. Open your eyes," he said.

There was a train due, or that had already departed, or
that never was, or that was, but had long since gone.

"I think about the dog. A lot. I miss the dog."

"There was no dog," he said, taking a drag.
"Think about it," he added, blowing smoke my way.

There was a dog, but not his dog, or not the dog
he thought I meant, which we never had.

"There was a dog." I was determined, and a little angry.

He laughed and took off his hat, dangling it from his hand.
"Whatever you say, you fucking crazy bitch."

Trains look small at a distance, deadly from up close.
There is time for one to become the other, either way.

I didn't answer. I wore a veil like a death mask.
I wore a small tam like a zucchetto. Pax vobiscum.

"Wait here forever if you want, I'm leaving," he said
and stood up, but lingered, finishing his unfiltered.

"You still love me. I know you do," I said softly, viciously.

"You don't know shit. Try opening your mail sometimes."

There are letters that form words, others that stand for things;
letters one saves for years, others forgotten on a hall table.

"I miss that dog. he was a good dog," I said,
but there was no one there, and the station was gone.

Lady Poet

Who changed you, water lily, who betrayed
and left your leaves to sway half-drownëd here?
Your moon-dazed face is pale, night-sick, afraid.
Water lily so wounded, so austere.

You of many stems but a single face--
no voice at all except poems water-writ.
Who muddied the stars of your secret place,
and forced such a sorrowful alphabet?

Seaside Fable

A memory came to me, riding in a wagon
pulled by a baboon. Sick and white-faced,
this memory asked for a glass of vinegar
and told me in Spanish that the baboon was a doctor.

"She can cure you," the memory assured me
in a terrible cross-saw voice. "I'm not sick," I
insisted, but the memory barked, balancing
a world on its nose like a seal and said, "You are dead already."

This world spun on a wash of wine, yellow and sour,
and was no world of mine. "Listen, horrid seaside ghost,
ashes can never be castles again, and you don't exist."
That's when the sick, dying, putrescent memory-thing
bit me in the heart, and laughing, threw back its head as if hanged.

There was nothing the baboon doctor could do,
and seeing this, she hocked my memory and gave
me the ticket, saying, "Swap me your forgiveness,"
but I injected her with roaring fury and beat her to death
with my empty heart.

My Despair

—when skies are hanged and oceans drowned,
the single secret will still be man --e.e. cummings

I spoke to my despair
in a voice that October
wears around its injured throat
on a chain of dripping water.

Because the nights are too long,
I sew their darkness into a jacket
and on the sleeves are
embroidered golden snakes.

I sit at a table made of the world
with legs of heirloom iron and wind.
Young men run past, shouting
and dragging morning to her grave.

In evening, I speak to the cardinal
who comes to my window like a Gypsy.
I say, the dawn is still in love with you
but a snake strikes the cardinal

from my sleeves
and my despair.

In Honor Of

They name things after people.
It's done all the time,
like

the George Washington Bridge
or
Kennedy Space Center.

Nobody doesn't like Sara Lee
but then,
Sara Lee never did anything to me.

There are others.
O'Hare airport,
Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility
or
Willard Asylum for the Chronic Insane.

I'm adding one
and calling it
The Pat R. Harvey Desert.
Its grand scale reflects your self-importance,
its shifting sands your endless bogus tap dance,
and its
vast, uninhabitable wastes
your vacant heart.

I placed a plaque
smack dab in the middle
where the sun is harshest.
It tells the tale
of which curb I kicked your bullshit to.
If you want it,
it's out there where nothing can survive
with your golf clubs
and your
side piece.

Black Blooms

If black flowers gave the earth its bones
and with their roots made purpose for a heart
could they--in profusion--each bloom alone
when innumerable leaves keep petals apart?

I bring you black blooms
which in dreams were red
strewn on a grave
which must do for a bed.

If black flowers' heads nod with heat
as a lover's will when told it's over
will frost only make them more discreet
and scornful of the simple clover?

I bring you black blooms
which October will kill
with inevitable, merciful
pitiless skill.

If black flowers die in a devil's vase
will November lament it's empty sill?
And will I curse your indifferent face
like black blooms preserved in a frozen rill?

Birds At Dawn

Dawn mists shroud the preening swan
forever in her bridal gown
down near the shore where footsteps end
then floating out to mourn again

This is the pond where my true love drowned
never seen and never found
by water lilies twined and kept
in green and silent alphabet.

Dawn obscures the calling crow
forever dressed in black who goes
along the branch that holds the knot
and every cherished thing he's got

This is the tree where my true love fell
as gracefully as Pachelbel
a dancer to adagio
as far as woven strands dare go.

Dawn comes dim and damp in hours
just light enough for owl's eyes
that see the hidden bower nest,
where silent birds don't sermonize.

This is the hour when my true love comes
in melancholy misted dawn
to call me on and call me down
demanding his sine qua non.

Things She Would Tell You If She Could

Romeo, gosh, I'm sorry how things turned out,
and sorry I didn't die after all like you thought.
I'm old now, you wouldn't look twice at me
but I miss you still, even so, most definitely.

You could find me tonight across from a cornfield
working the St. Lucy's Fall Festival and how would you feel
about that, babe? I wear a lumpy old overcoat
and sell tickets to teenagers so in love they almost float.

I get feeling sentimental and sad about everything
remembering how you said you were the All-Powerful Weather King
and could make the sun come out if I wished it,
or kiss me and kiss me again if I told you I missed it.

My goodness, Romeo, you don't know how often I still think of you,
like when I saw some crestfallen kid with wild hair walking through
the festival like he had something on his mind
and he seemed lonesome, like you, and quiet and kind.

It's almost midnight and the lights are going dim
so I've got to pack up and go home alone again.
I wish so hard that things had turned out different
and I'd say, "Romeo, oh Romeo," and you'd know what I meant.

Newton's Cradle

 In evening,
you spoke to me through the wall.
"I love you."

Don't.
It hurts when I laugh.

Tears, like sweat on a glass in summer.

Night, a smothering shadow.

In morning, diminished,
I love you as babies love,

desperate, red-faced, screaming.

Refraction

 does light lie?
do these leaves deceive?
what is green
but a word for a thing
we see a certain way

inside our skulls where no green thing grows?

here is my yellow dress.
my yellow hair.
and yellow fields stretching flat and far.
inside, my reasons.
outside, the sheltering trees,
our house in their lee.

also, your face, the flickering planets, and stars.

i want you, but i want the wind.
you say i deceive,
but what is wanting
but a word for a thing
for which there is really no word at all?

does light lie?
here is the yellow sunflower
and the yellow night-window
but they never
called themselves those things.
here is my silver ring and my yellow ticket--

i love your face, even though you don't believe
and wish me damned and dead because i go.

God, In Youth and Age

Mistakes were made. Things were done.

There in the void, scattering lava-spitting planets from Hell to next Thursday,

kid must have been stone lonesome.

If He drowned his toys in the bathtub for forty days, hey, it was The Exciting Game Without Any Rules.

Bitter little bastard, and so would you have been.

Time goes by, tick tock.

Awkward with girls, He just popped one pregnant.

Fast forward, single father with a son.

Awake at night, His fuck-ups from years ago torture Him still,

all the aggression and acting out.

Stone tablets just made it weird for everybody,

but He had to learn on the fly, no teachers, no friends.

What a smoking pile-up.

So there's His only son, chopping chairs and hope chests out of trees in the shed by himself.

"I'm gonna give you twelve friends, let you see the world, set everybody straight, do and have everything I never had!" Big smile, open arms, well? Well???

Jay turns back to planing the edge of a door.

The flying chips remind Him of His old lava-spitting planets, most of them rocky and dead in the end, and He goes off.

Presto, Jay's in the desert with the devil, for the good of all concerned.

Oh, He talks to the neighbors about sacrifice and salvation,

But every time He sees the hand-crafted coffee table out in the garage,

dusty,

forgotten next to the Jarts and the lawn mower,

He dips His old white-haired head,

leans down with His spotty hands on His knees

and whispers, "I am that I am," to nobody.

Love Lock

I have kept you in jars of glass
blown from my own body.
I have kept you in photographs that swam
and emerged from shallow night pools.

There is a blue cord connecting us,
an Arctic fissure calling with its constant lure.
I wake from dreams stunned, immobile,
a beat behind your false sunrise.

There is a bridge you don't believe in,
where I wait, lighting bonfires that burn the boards I stand on.
There is a lock and the looped chain future,
with only one key, in the palm of your hand.

As I turn to smoke, you turn to stone
where terns wheel and scream their Gypsy fortunes.
I become a bird as I fall, forgiving us both,
in awkward semaphore I hope you'll understand.

Coffee Girl

I'm Coffee Girl from a pottery wheel
warm and curved and hanging from a hook
I know one trick,
to distract the honest eye
but every shell is empty.

Choose me
and you'll be sorry, though I'm
sweet on my feet,
I'm Coffee Girl when I fall
I run out right before your honest eyes.

Loves Me / Loves Me Not

I must now consider, I suppose,
that I have failed again
to do the right thing,
to puzzle out what's expected of me.

I didn't make your bed
deep enough, it seems;
and it's like you said...
before your head full of leaves
and purple-ebony hand on the grass.
Will I always fail you?
or can I fix us, at last?

My mind is a little spider on the edge of a cup
filled with blue rain where in awful dreams I scramble,
all eight legs feeling in the air.
You rose, didn't you, to exchange our different slumbers?
You came to me, down the path, softly disintegrating
though my anguish never does.
I breathe for both of us the smoky air of loss.

I have fallen short again, like a sky never holding sun rise,
a pale after-image, watery, foul,
not worthy of this place where grackles strut like Aztec kings.
I have brought the orchid, and the lily
to place in your eyes to disguise my ugliness with lovely visions.
Forgive me for what I have done, and how I have failed.
I am barefoot, like a twin
and will wait here--the least I can do--
making of your rags and sinews my costume of chains and rings.

Love Letter From A New York Girl Stuck In Texas

Honey,

I'm so glad that this has reached you--and that you wanted to open it and read my words, as you used to love to do. Maybe things haven't changed so much, after all?

I won't say "wish you were here" and I wouldn't will it so, even if I had a genie on my shoulder taking down every word. But I am with you...you know that, yes? Even still?

I'm thinking, tonight, of a song you once played for me on the phonograph--you with your vintage records you love so much. It was called "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." Do you remember? And do you recall how I wouldn't believe you that it was "The King of the Blues" singing it? It sounded so old-timey. You had that sparkle in your eye and your lips turned up at one corner, it amused you so, knowing you were right all along. How I insisted! I'm a silly goose, darling.

Tell me, sweetheart, is it evening as you read this? Have you had a nice meal, are you feeling content? I want you to be, even if you don't believe it. (I can grin that Cheshire grin at you too, you know!) Even though it's late here--nearly midnight--I am only now sitting down. I'm having crab cakes with baby carrots, plus Raisin Rum Cake for dessert. Yes, your favorite--I specifically put in my request for it, in your honor. You say I always get what I want--not always, I'm afraid, mon coeur. Not always. In spite of all my best efforts.

Well, sweetie, the time has flown and I need to get this into an envelope for you. They don't let us seal them, did you know that? I hope they don't undo my best intentions by redacting the heart of all I've said. I love you, I love you, I love you. There. They can't black out all three, can they?

Please forgive me, mon petit coeur, for anything I may have done to offend you...ever. It would mean so much to me if you could. That girl, she was coming between us, ruining everything, and the thought of losing you made me not myself. Blame it on that Other Me, won't you? Could you? I won't beg--I know you like me best when I'm all devil-may-care, and I promise to try to be that way from now on. I'll pretend I'm only visiting the doctor, getting a routine inoculation so that our next weekend won't be ruined by me sniffling and honking like a sea bird. All right, off I go any minute now..."down under" let's call it. That sounds so much better, yes? "Tie me kangaroo down...sport..." Poor kanga.

Forgive me. Don't forget me. Be glorious, for us both, all right?

All my love,

Charlene

The Crow In My Eye

There's a crow in my eye
remembering you.
I could be smiling or
lying or
out of my mind,
but the crow won't forget
your face, and he won't be kind.

You frustrate him,
by law of similars.
My crow likes trinkets, toys,
and fresh-killed love
or such like that my crow thinks of.

Light

Light
as new snow, my words for you
dropped in your coffee, sweet
jesus I can be
bright
as December sun--

so drink deep. Soft kisses so near after night
mimic closely
what I really felt when we began and I would have
bought and ground your favorite beans
to place
real heat
before you, holy as an offering.
