understand--
it will be a tricky business.
The ghost will not wear the dress you like.
She will ignore
the meal
the Merlot
and the Mozart.
She will not believe in the future that you've planned.
To a ghost,
the future is feathers made of fog
on a bird that flies away before it is born.
A ghost will not wear your ring,
bear your child, or even your touch.
"What do you want?"
you ask, from the dark, with your hand-holding friends.
She wants to knock stuff off the shelf
and wake you at the witching hour--what do you think of that?
Why persist with your ghost-box, night-vision, Ouija board routine
when you could just get a cat?

for What's Going On? -- Ghosts.
Most of this poem is from something I wrote in 2012 called Loving the Ghost, I changed the final 6 lines, which are new, and made it more light-hearted than the original
Music: Kiffness x Cala I Go Meow
I enjoyed the playful ending and also the magical imagery woven throughout - Jae
ReplyDeleteI love how you have personalized this ghost, given her a personality. It made me smile, and the ending was perfect!
ReplyDelete". . . the future is feathers made of fog
ReplyDeleteon a bird that flies away before it is born." All plans are off with a ghost, and it's a bit like that with a cat. Except fulfilling a cat's daily needs help create a bond and usher in love. I enjoy the choices the ghost rejects and the Ouija board friends. Fun!
"To a ghost the future is feathers made of fog on a bird that flies away before it is born." If my brain could conjure ONE line like that, I would die happy. Smiles. Superb. I love the "when you could just get a cat?"
ReplyDeleteGhosts and cats are both mysterious so if you want a bit of adventure a cat is a safer option. Ouija boards always spooked me. yikes...

ReplyDeleteon a bird that flies away before it is born." Love this.
