In The Rhambangle

In the rhambangle, the climbing vines
looped themselves up and through the latticework
like emotions falling from a dream.

You loved the soff birds who made their nests
in the high corners; feathered deities
without ceremony but stuffed fat on our adoration anyway.

I liked your boots, especially tucked beneath a wicker chair
in the moonlight, lost to your feet
but called snarfdiffanous by the avante garde among the moths of local wing.

I haven't said it well, I realize. My sunglasses kept the words
after I first saw them in morning light.
It's lalamilty, so they say, making these sounds no string nor key would own,

but I keep trying, because I love you and your shossy half-turned smile.

for "Stuff & Nonsense' with Rommy at Real Toads. She asks that we use her invented words rhambangle, snarfdiffanous, and lalamilty. Soff and shossy are my own.

  1. Wow, this is really wonderful. You took nonsense words and made them sing. I especially love your closing line. Sigh. No one writes love better than you.

  2. An extremely sophisticated use of the nonsense words here. I liked your additions as well. The whole piece has a gentleness, a softness, to it that is very touching.

  3. "Shossy" is quite a cool word, and soff was put in in such a seamless way, I thought it was a real word I'd never heard of...

  7. Nonsense that isn't nonsense, just like that viny latticework of dreams under which we lie every night, staring up at the stars of our own cosmic maelstrom. Delightfully light, without sacrificing an inch of depth, and somehow, very eloquent of the way love is--especially those boots, so lost to and so full of the memory of adorable toes.

  8. This is such a tender expression of love - the made up words become a part of the magic.

  9. The nonsense is so much more sense (or rather sensibility) in how you have created a perfect love poem.
