Hrimfaxi

Hrimfaxi shakes and cold stars fill the sky--
His breath falls and frosts the fields.
Like the currents of tide or wind,
his movement is his purpose and your life

is simply a road for his hooves,
a place where he will go and has been.

Nótt whispers and he slows;
she raises her hand and time stutters, every star goes still.
The firmament is the field through which he goes,
and his hoofbeats are the ticking of time.

His body moves through wheeling constellations,
and the stars are the grains of his pitch-hooved mill.

No structure can hold Hrimfaxi, no time precedes him.
There has never been an hour when he was not there,
carrying Nótt away from and toward Dagr and Skinfaxi.
Day, loud bright harlequin on Loki's leash, I give you no care.

I wait for Hrimfaxi, who stamps and stars tumble unmoored,
whose sides are bellows for a cold fire, and who treads the moonlit air.

Ooga Booga

Ooga booga, darling.
It's me, sunflower face
the fox-hearted misdirected letter of your dreams.

I live in the space between the walls.
I play Candyland with brain-injured devils
for a pot of chilly blue dawns.

I raid your fridge while you dream of dolphins.
I tip-toe around your place, judging the art,
boiling the pasta, making a mess.

That's me saying, "love me" from the heat vents.
That's my voice on the tv during your ballgame,
making you fuck with the settings.

Give in, please. I haven't got all day.
Once, I was an Egyptian queen.
Once, I was a Dutch laundress.
Now I live inside your Jiffy-Pop, getting hot, expanding suddenly.

It's me, sunflower face,
the fox-hearted misdirected letter of your dreams.
You'll wake up in love with me.

You'll wake up as a black horse wearing a feather plume.
You'll wake up to find me in bed next to you, staring.
I've put my stamp, my kiss, my spell on you.

Easy, my high stepping Friesian, shh shh...
It's all right, I'm a specter and I've got the cure
for all your missteps, I'm an oval track, fresh spring clover,

a pinch of salt, and a lot of black cat.

Chronics

In the rehab place where wasted hearts
sleep too much like buried creatures
the nurse dispenses dreams from a cart
and the worst of us become the teachers

If you're feeling sentimental
aversion therapy works the best
and for something supplemental
try stuffing newspaper in your chest

We the burned, we the bruised
nod in our not-quite present way
shock-shelved inventory seldom used
but trotted out on holidays

A waitress serves the plates--we break them
to wake ourselves like catatonics;
we choose a new mistake at random
we the dazed romantic chronics.

Bio

All she wanted was
pretty horses with feather plumes,
standing balanced on their backs
as they circle the moon.

All she wanted was
Christmas morning and fruit on a plate,
candied stollen sliced and served,
rising early to start sleeping late.

Now, visit her where
cornball Napoleons roam the rooms
spouting blather in poetry's place
while staff cup the pills and count the spoons.

Bareback Rider

When I was a girl, I often dreamed
that I rode a haunted horse whose head was ether
and its steady breath was my own pulse
sounding through my ear pressed hard upon the pillow.

We rode in slow procession through
the house gone unfamiliar in weird shadows
pulling a death-carriage behind us
and it seemed that I labored while the horse hovered

With lantern lights for eyes
on each side in concert with the slant moon
dim-blind through silver windows
but watching as the horse's flanks rose and fell.

A bareback rider, I hooked fingers
through streamers of jet mane like widow's weeds in a breeze,
hoping to hang on, to wake up
only to see Thanatos the ostler smiling and standing

At the stable door holding a gleaming dark apple for his charge.

Bucket Of Tar

Here is a bucket of tar
and a photograph of us dancing
on the head of a pin
shaped from a cloud already burning away.

I know how angry you are,
that you'd love to pour across my border
and make me care, but
my bridges are mirrors where magpies scry.

I know I said things, we both did,
with knives and roses in our teeth.
I am Eve with an apple in my jaw,
for whom God made highways and the will to survive.

Take the tar
and make your skin warm again.
Travel over yourself to the next natural barrier,
listen to the river and toss the photograph in.

Chinese Box

The restaurant was a Chinese box.
My order was wrong,
then right,
then wrong again.

The waiters were men,
then women,
then men.

You were angry with me,
then not;
then you weren't you, or at least,
didn't seem to be.

An alchemist came and turned the soup to stone,
the stone to a poem,
together to alone,
despite all assurances printed on the menu card.

Lunch for 2.
Dinner for 4.
In your hand an apple,
then nothing; then a core.

I said, "My love...my love...my love...my love...."
as I dug with my fingers all the way through the world,
to find a hard queen, a woman dissolved
in your eye looking back saying, "Now what, girl?"
