Ice

Winter went too far that year
like a friend who shows her ugly side,
as heedless as some smartphone fuck in a bookstore
as numb and hard as a cop's baton.

Southern beauty, transplanted lady
brought here as a baby,
my English walnut tree was shivered--shocked--
a dazed involuntary wandering the halls of summer for years after.

This year, unfed, the bandit squirrels stopped knocking down
her new growth bouquets.
This year her gown is lush, her branches heavy with baubles,
the first walnuts in five years.

I love to sit beneath her, bathed in green
and the susurration of her clustered feathers.
No silent era star wearing ostrich plumes
could compete with her now--she preens in the pleasant weather.

This spring, she is an Impressionist lady
holding a parasol over me as I am shivered--shocked--
by my country showing her ugly side
my sanctuary soft and sweet, the future hard as a cop's baton.

Sensei At Sunset

And so, once again
I speak to you of the rat--
the bachelor rat--
who visits my garage.

He is a good rat,
even a fine one as rats go.
Never once has he lied to me
or tried to be anything
but what he is.

I feed him each evening
but tried to stop when the weather improved.
He came out and looked at me
as if to ask what had happened
and couldn't we overcome it?

I admire the rat.
He harbors no silent resentments.
He is who he is
all the time
and perhaps that is why he is alone.

I am alone also
and I am who I am, as the rat teaches.
I have a fine dog.
Many birds come to visit
and I feed this rat
rather than trying to kill him.

Goodnight, good sir.
I am grateful for your life
and my own.

Evening Out, Recalled

It was a delicious meal.
My heart pumped all through the time I was eating it
as it had before and has continued to do every moment since.

As it was in the beginning,

It was snowing outside
but the restaurant had a fireplace and was softly lit.
You were there, and as I ate, I loved you and felt happy.

is now

On my plate, the gone moments
of a breeze and the scent of new grass; the rhythm
of a place and season. The ability to move and exist.

and ever shall be

I remember that evening
even as it has vanished, as you have vanished,
as the meal and place and I myself have vanished

world without end

The gold of the brandy
in your glass, the smoothness of the skin of my hands,
all appears and vanishes in my memory as it, too, vanishes.

Amen, my love. Amen.

Shift

Mid-August, the weather patterns change,
but slowly,
like something forgotten in the fridge;
the holy
turning secular, then profane.

We had our own world, you and I,
a beautiful in-joke
but, behind your back as I looked at you,
a green-screen took
over and spoiled it with the whisper of a lie.

All summer, verdant leaves and cool shade
were hiding
the dying brown when the sugar stops flowing.
I'm finding
endings gorgeous, and terrible, like the love we almost made.

Dr. Morphia

A doctor was sent for the season
called counterfeit by
summer's heart.
No use in the cure, or the reason
that shadows and rings
keep apart
from the cure that coils in the foyer
of the house that love recommends
to the moon and its lilies who crave for
the stitches that wound
as they mend.

The doctor prescribes herself autumn
and waits for ice to inscribe
a vow to be broken at midnight
by the needle
disguised as a bride
and when the old brag fades to nothing
and the peacocks their colors remove
the idiot winter with moon lilies wins her
with remedies
borrowed
and blue.

Evelyn, By Lamp Light

Give her pages blanket soft

with use, with love, worn--

familiar lines still welcome

those dear ones passed, then born--

love treasured, lorn,

stitch plots taken up, then dropped.
