these thoughts,
this poem;
this moment and this room.
I've been pondering oddities:
sundogs,
Marfa lights,
rings around the moon.
Unbidden,
unchanged--
love...love itself,
and my crave called love for you.
I'll not always be here;
behind this door, ajar--
my heart, this house, vased iris,
as far fragile these things are.
I've been pondering sanctities;
my dogs,
cool nights,
things said kept entre nous--
Unbidden,
unchanged--
love...love itself,
and my crave called love for you.

huge sigh... ripped my heart out.
ReplyDeleteOne of your best more-than-a love-poem love poems--the references to unexplained phenomena, the soft, lullaby-like cadence, and the bittersweet tenderness all fold into each other to make a smooth and subtle draught of shadows and song. Again, one of your best, and that's no poetic Fata Morgana. So good, in fact, that I am reduced to quoting:
ReplyDelete'..I'll not always be here;
behind this door, ajar--
my heart, this house, vased iris,
as far fragile these things are...'
Three Stanzas echo and I know the echo will continue a while, while sanctities are pondered, doors are opened and closed, leaving happens (except for love). So gently one gets used to the ache, so slowly that nothing seems to be moving.
ReplyDeleteA gorgeous photo and a heart-rending poem. xo
ReplyDeletethis crave... yes sometimes naming it love might be the best thing.. and waiting with the door ajar might be the best thing... wonderful use of repetitions..
ReplyDeleteInternal reflections turned to art in the poets hands... who could ask for more? I'll take that beautiful refrain with me today, with a big thank you.
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful. Most poignant, "I will not always be here...."
ReplyDeleteThis is incredibly gorgeous. I agree with Hedge; one of your best.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful song... ;-) both yours and ELH

Sanctities versus oddities, very nicely put. The oddities don't go away so we'd best hang tight with the loved ones. I miss my Adi (a beagle dog).
ReplyDelete..
you make poems big enough to discuss and moon over
