Garden Wall

They stood daddy up
against the garden wall
and shot him through the head for writing against the regime.

Our ginger cat
hid behind the tomato vines.
Its eyes were yellow. The sky was blue. The leaves speckled red on the green.

  1. Ha, I have been wondering if my name is on a list somewhere. Would not be surprised. The cat's eyes, the red on green, such strong imagery.

  2. OH... that first line and then the speckled red on green - And everything in between. The sad thing is this is non fiction. Well penned.

  3. the one fear I have is not that my name is on the list, but that my sons would suffer.

  4. There is a very classical feel to this, almost as if it were a poster I'd seen and read many times, yet still fresh as blood that hasn't darkened yet--vivid, exquisite and terrifying little poem, Shay.

  5. It is the job of poetry to clean up our word-clogged reality by creating silences around things. Mallarme

  7. Yes, yes. And that kind of shit always happens on the beautiful days.

  8. I love what you did with "on the green," placing this on a (bloodied, as I see it) golf course. I also see a touch of the red paint (on the leaves) from Alice in Wonderland.

    This is my favorite part:
    "Our ginger cat
    hid behind the tomato vines."

That sounds like one smart cat.

I also like all the ways the opening line can be read.

  9. This is amazing, Shay. The brevity and colors all stand out clearly.

  10. This is outstanding. The matter of fact tone makes it twice as chilling.

  11. The tone, the acceptance of the horrific like it was ordinary...So much spoken in such few words.
