Dorothy's been dead
for 76 years.
I don't suppose it matters that her light bill was late--
does it, dears?
Dorothy loved the flickers
and dime store rings.
She worked in a stitchery til it turned her fingers rough--
for hardly anything.
Her parents spoke German.
Dotty spoke jazz.
At the last moment, she looked straight into the lens--
a look to last,
and it has.

Her smile cool dark and promising,
