Hobby Horse

I should have known
when I offered Hobby sweet, lovely sugar cubes
and she just sat there
like, lobotomized or something.

Sing a song with me Hobby!
Tell me a story about horses!
Recite a fun rhyme!
Dance with me!

Or, just fall over on the floor.
~sigh~

Doctor Dollie, Hobby seems sick.
She won't eat anything,
she hasn't used the bathroom, like ever
and seems out of touch with her body.

Neigh if you can hear us, Hobby!
Stamp your hoo--
Oh, right.
Wink, then!

Oh Hobby, I love you
even though you don't do anything
or say anything
or even seem to know I'm alive
just like Mommy loves Daddy!

Hobby, we shall ride the range
even though you're passing strange
I will love you, love you true
and never make you into glue

Hobby, wild horse of the western bedroom!
with a head full of fluff
and a body like a broom!
Hi-yo, hi-yo Hobby! Awayyy!

I will do everything!
Do for you and talk for you
preparing me for marriage
somedayyy! Hoorayyyyyy!

Jenny Mechanical

Jenny Mechanical is too mecha for the main house
but too human for the tool shed.
She can turn stripped screws, whip up a perfect grilled cheese,
provide power during an outage and mow and mulch while she's at it.
She also dreams of a recharging kiss and poems appear at her fingertips.

Jenny had a little lamb whose fleece was made of synthetic polymer
and everywhere that Jenny went, the lamb was sure to follow.

See Jenny Mechanical, stopped in the middle of the front yard,
telling her lamb to look at the new leaves with its LED eyes.
She has always been a perfectly average 5 foot 3, can open any jar, pick any lock,
but she is crying into its faux wool because of something beyond utility.

She is needed but not loved, maintained but casually disposable,
and the poems at her fingertips have diverged from factory settings,
glowing pink
then rose
then lavender
then blue
then indigo
like space that has no atmosphere yet sustains those billion burning stars.

Sleep Walk

one day, he'll be shot through with cancer,
empty as an old oxygen tank.
she'll forget him before the year is out,
and marry somebody else;
when she's three months along with a baby conceived from make-up sex,
she'll take thalidomide to help her sleep.

bill and larry have dates,
but would really rather be with each other.
larry will solve it with a noose;
bill will become a cop and bust fags with a baton.
ellen is already bipolar, but doesn't realize it yet.
millie will marry a dentist who will beat her brains in,
then he'll sit in front of that same fireplace sucking gas from the clinic.

tonight it's still early, and they're waiting for larry's cool aunt
who will tell their fortunes from the tarot.
on his deathbed, cancer boy will remember how his date's boobs felt in his hands,
but he'll have forgotten his own sons' names--
the ones whose hair will be longer than hers is now.

The Demanding Doll

The Demanding Doll isn't satisfied with the Colonial in Hunter's Grove anymore.
A few pairs of shrimpy shoes the size of baby teeth
are supposed to keep her happy?
Get a real job, you worm.
Grow some.
Get out there and get busy.

The Demanding Doll hasn't got the distractions of motherhood.
Breasts may be for babies,
but if someone would just swing her by her ankles,
she could use hers to hammer horse shoes.

The Demanding Doll has powers.
If she wants more hair, she can just pull it out the top of her skull.
She can do all the positions in the Kama Sutra and never get a cramp.
She can keep living for weeks without her head.
Close all the car windows
in the middle of July.
Leave her there alone.
She won't die.

What do you bring to the table?
Are you a man or a mouse?
Don't be so meek.
Speak.

Listen at you.
"I thought everything was perfect!"
"I thought you really loved me!"
"I thought you were fully posable!"
Wake up.
She doesn't want any toy Escalade with plastic doors.
And one thing more...
she's late,
and it's not yours.
