I Walk Out On The Fragrant Fields Of September*
In The Barn of Morning I found a stool, but its cow was in the field,
south of the sun,
and just north of the earth.
The stool was called The Stool of Error,
Its legs named Impulse, Disaster and Wisdom,
each one held in the jaws of a laughing hyena.
I took my bonnet and breastplate
and walked out upon the fragrant fields of September,
following the shifting arrow of a weather vane
and the cowbell-call of my wandering girl.
"Halloo," I called, carrying The Stool of Error
and shaking the hyenas off.
"It's just me, with my bucket and milking hat,
dandelion blooms in the pocket of my smock."
"Bessie," I said, beginning my work,
"In The Barn of Morning, when all is quiet and you face the east as all milkers do and must,
Do you think of your lost calves
and the bulls who came and went?
Or are your big, kind eyes on the brightening world
and all of its clover and blue sky bigness?
Moo me a clue, girlfriend.
Under this gingham and chain mail I am fierce lonesome
and sorely unsure."
All afternoon the sun dripped across the heavens
while hyenas chittered and hid behind a buckthorn bush.
I picked up the Stool of Error and led Bessie back
to the Barn of Evening.
She lowed softly as she settled in,
and I thought that was as good advice as any,
The Soft Moo of Stay Tuned, Chickie,
a sort of psalm for this moon-hearted milkmaid to ponder.

June 21st (Green, Wild Green)
as generous as a lover two weeks past hello.
All of this profusion, it doesn't need me--
it simply is, bursting with itself because it can
and will
and must.
Not so long ago, these trees and this ground
was bare as an old steamer trunk,
empty as an attic.
It didn't need me then, either,
even in extremity.
Any words or prayers I may have said were said
to comfort
my own mind.
Lately, I find myself thinking
(as I sit surrounded by green, wild green)
about clouds that change their motion and mien;
about doors and blooms and lovers
that open and close, arrive and slip away.
I wandered spring and summer until spring and summer were gone,
and now green,
wild green,
reminds me of what I never understand or hold for long,
leaving me lonely to the bone
thorned by my own stupid and constant craving
in a garden of green,
wild green.

Here
of the Cape Cod cottage by the blue sea--
here is the blue handle of a blue broom
on the floor of the penitentiary.
Here are blue fish in a blue basket
to clean and fry on a blue afternoon--
here is the blue face in a blue casket
and the blue of the ocean and the moon.
Lapis this lonely feeling, slate the sky
Carolina the soft chime on the air--
peacock the pride, azure the things that die;
admiral the clock that takes me unaware--
sapphire this sense of the heavy, the high,
and this indigo poem, like foxfire there.

It's been brought to my attention that the following song is sung by Katie Malua, not Amy Winehouse.
