Copper Country

It's beautiful up there, and you shone.
At home on the rocky shores of Lake Superior,
I was a smooth stone for skipping; you were sunlight on the water.
What I didn't understand was the night that far north.

Red-haired, speaking with a hint of Quebecois,
you drew me immediately, because I was little rocks beneath the tide
and mistook you for sunrise and a pleasant peninsula.
What I didn't understand was Gichigami's jealous nature.

Any geologist sitting on a stool in any tavern in copper country
can tell you that a rock can be both solid and fragile.
He could describe the smooth, sharp, shell-like fractures
called conchoidal. But he is drinking, leave him be.

I brought heft with me, I thought, cases of books
and a hard restlessness, cold to the touch and longing not to be.
Laying eyes in you, I sensed your spark and mistook it for warmth.
Copper conducts, it borrows, it doesn't hold a damn thing.

I am a little of this, a little of that--a collector, I carry some of everything
that has ever touched me. I am worlds, a common rock, a human.
You are what you are, pure in your own denying way, charged but empty.
What I didn't see then was that I was seeking brightness down a shaft.

We lay together in the cooling nights, the snow came, ten-twelve feet.
I thought I was strong, and that you were worth every devotion,
but I was flint, cracking and stabbing as we loved, and you were
never meant to be moved, turning weedy green in the northern air.

I miss copper country. It's real, though mined out now. I've moved south,
grown older, living alone, staring into the fridge at midnight as if at stars.
And you? You dug in deeper, a disused light on the shore, pretty and dark.
What I didn't understand was that we would hurt each other so much,

and that it would matter so little. The indifferent lake still shines and sighs.

My father was fascinated with the history of our state, and took me with him all over, explaining and teaching as we went. There is nothing quite like being taught by a teacher who loves his subject.

Michigan's state motto is, "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you."

Lake Superior is vast, and always cold. The shores are rocky. Its wild, careless beauty is easy to fall in love with, and it does not care that you are there.

Conversant Animals In Stovepipe Hats

 In those days,
the skies were closer--
God peered down from nearer by
still tinkering.

Animals had names
and wore stovepipe hats
or tam o' shanters in various shades
and could speak.

Why tell us this
now, when vipers emerge
from every apple, with tongues
hollow and stiff?

I wish to soothe
your two exhausted ears
and place fish there, in the waters
of your mind.

Here is the boat
and the cloaks of soft fabric
to wear on the decks on the sea on the sphere
spinning the tale

of us,
every moment,
even now.

River Under a Stone Bridge

The river runs under a stone bridge
down where no one ever goes
a place for old men where the trees bend
and ask, "Pourquoi chercher autre chose?"

Its source is hidden as is its end
this river that barely flows
where the trees bend, a place for old men
who ask, "Pourquoi chercher autre chose?"

Where the stone bridge breaks, it cannot mend
what deep January froze
a place for old men where the trees bend
and ask, "Pourquoi chercher autre chose?"

______________

pourquoi chercher autre chose?  =  why look for anything else?

A ZaniLa Rhyme for What's Going On? "In Your Deepest January"  The instructions require that phrase or "In my deepest January" but there were two problems which I hope that our wonderful host Sherry will let me slide by with. One was, that phrase just doesn't sound like me, to me. The other is that a ZaniLa Rhyme has a syllable requirement of 9-7-9-9 and a rhyme scheme and inverted third line that would have made it almost impossible. The prompt phrase is 8 syllables all by itself, so I almost had to shorten it, and so I did. If Sherry sends the Prompt Police to collect me, I will understand.

Birds At Dawn

Dawn mists shroud the preening swan
forever in her bridal gown
down near the shore where footsteps end
then floating out to mourn again

This is the pond where my true love drowned
never seen and never found
by water lilies twined and kept
in green and silent alphabet.

Dawn obscures the calling crow
forever dressed in black who goes
along the branch that holds the knot
and every cherished thing he's got

This is the tree where my true love fell
as gracefully as Pachelbel
a dancer to adagio
as far as woven strands dare go.

Dawn comes dim and damp in hours
just light enough for owl's eyes
that see the hidden bower nest,
where silent birds don't sermonize.

This is the hour when my true love comes
in melancholy misted dawn
to call me on and call me down
demanding his sine qua non.

The Water Dove

I kissed the dove
who made her nest
in the lonely pool at the bottom of my heart.

Little water-dove
sweet creature, feathered mother,
when I breathe, you flutter, shift, and sigh.

I kissed the foxes
whose meal was lately
in the henhouse where all rain is born.

Little hidden ones
with your silent black feet,
when I cry, you peer out from moonlit memory.

I kissed the gamesman
in the old pink cottage
because he was there, and silent, like God.

I was the little nanny
in the graveyard singing
to the doves, and foxes, and gamesman

peering back at me from the lonely pool
of moonlit memory.

Bridge Over Water Lilies

My heart rides in the petals of a water lily--
my coat a pebbled shore.
Here is the bridge of turquoise stones,
magpie calls, and bamboo bones
with the blind sky waiting, waiting, evermore.

My heart rides in the blind sky waiting--
my love a wounded bird.
Here is the bridge of mica memories.
the lost valise, and aromas of home
with the blue water singing, singing, a flowing word.

My days are blue water singing--
in a ewer made of hours.
Here is the bridge of goldfish scales,
old china dishes, and copper nails
all riding in the petals of a lily, a lily, my water bower.

Nurse to the Water

I am nurse to the Water,
Moon in a bowl at its bedside.

It looks back at me as if to say, "I am here,
deep and permanent; I will always stay,"
but its language is Leaving and every movement
is a perpetual going-away.

I am bride to the Lake Grass
expending itself in a season's rising.
silent and thin, the Water its artist's garret.
It finds me neither interesting nor surprising
as I see to its unbordered house,
my face a familiar detail that passes.

Are you dying, Water, a Gypsy in love with sand--
the sand in love with and holding the Cattails?
I make my rounds on the wooden walkway,
Child of trees the Lake Grass envies.
Death beneath my feet, mercy at my hand
I am the Double-Spirit who must be her own comfort
and work by Night, the sister-ghost of Day.

the nurses deferred

the nurses deferred
to masquerade doctors in balloon pants
who told them
go to the underwater pharmacy
--a nickel a snorkel--
and dispense tobacco to the terminals
because
rules are restrictive
useless
barbaric
and they gave these instructions via telegram stop
from the big band ballroom stop
where the rhumba and the mambo
never stop
stop
and they used the bandmaster's baton
to perform minor surgery
on this poem.

In that town, at that time, the women never cut their hair
because of sorrow,
and the river's edge, and the need to weep
while covering their faces with their hair like bent willows.

In the heavy hour, in the day of the pueblo mission,
a mockingbird perched in the bell tower was singing,
"Come to the river's edge, to the place of no explanation.
Let down your hair as the boatmen do their sails in the silent evening."

the security guards delayed,
unfurling silk kimonos to wear in the confusion of night
and they had dragons
and chrysanthemums
draped over their arms and holsters
and their coffee was rich with a stupendous dizzying energy
which spoke to them
saying,
"you must leave this place and go
to help
and heal
where the real
suffering
is."

Isla de los Fantasmas

On the Isla de los Fantasmas, the keeper's wife
spends dawn searching out exhausted birds on the pebbled beach.
She comes to them as if she were light itself
and believes herself to be light itself
but she is as broken as they are.

Realizing this, and wishing to compensate her for her kindness,
they transfer to her their laments, worn around her heart
like dolmens of sound. Within each one, she dies.
With each dawn, each bird, each song, she dies.
The wind is the keeper's wife singing.

It is not the currents of sky or water that exhaust the birds.
It is the endless impassivity of the surface they cannot bear.
Their wings are the pages of hymnals
their bodies are the bindings of hymnals
that can only close at last on the Isla de los Fantasmas.

The keeper's task is to keep the enormous eye of the light
emptying itself out at the water, and the weary birds.
The light comes to them as if it were the keeper's wife,
and believes itself to be the keeper's wife,
but she is down on the pebbled beach, in her dolmen, singing.

For Su Griffin

There was a woman in love with fog
and the harbor knew her name.

Su of the basket heart,
Su of the darning needle nights.
Su out of breath, or holding it, just the same.

When you're a woman at odds with time,
every second slows the heartbeat.

Woman of the breakwater bones.
Woman in the crowd, alone.
Woman who folds her heart, folds the dough, folds the sheet.

There was a woman in love with fog
and the harbor knew her name.

Greening The Jade

There are wheels on cobblestones
outside the windows of her words.
There is a sailor's parrot on a velvet swing
and strands of colored beads in the doorway to her room.

There is never any summer, no noon to white the wall
and so she'll understand if what you told her wasn't real.
A Persian's ears are there to warm her hands
indifferent to the wheeling way she feels.

San Francisco gray as gulls' wings in the morning
or Barcelona in the lazy afternoon
are in the jeweled clip that holds her careless hair back
to ease her eyes to catch the moon.

Don't say you're sorry, don't sing softly in her stairwell
where the echoes' angels fade.
She always knew that open windows let the rain in
to blue her dreams and green the jade.

Mike Pence, Gemini, Visits The Mayo Clinic

We made our own zodiac from prayer books and beating-sticks,
kept folded in narrow creases,
vermin parables for rot-paper effigies
writ down as paragons in the cheap potboiler of continuous torrent and industry.

Down at the harbor,
salt angels wave goodbye to ships laden
with cream-skinned babies in barrels,
alive in a circumscribed commerce
of palm
and funeral
and coral-colored sunrise.

We peddle our peculiar zodiac at stations
where all trains have evaporated,
the green and violet of bruises rain themselves clean,
and ballads are sung with lark tongues lodged
in mother throats that cannot exist,
but which sing and sing and sing.

Come, find our graves in the rockery,
lend us new deaths by instant contract.
Arrange us on new stars aloft by decree,
and kill the old deities by stoning via television.
The night horizon will slide us
to the harbor,
to the arms of sirens
who will sing us, exploding,
through dust-hearts and lie-lips
to the stuttering surprise
of creatures too perverted and vile
to carry the note that we plot, on charts,
like a poem slipped beneath the door of permanent astonishment.

Agua

They search for water with their fat fingers
but would settle for water vapor, thin as faint praise
from a black-dress mother with her big back turned.

Visors are a view of the future,
misshapen fish-eye suns,
blank faces reducing enormous fires to cold coins.

Stumbling weightless vagabonds
stab pennants into wastelands and wear our emblem,
the sprinting antelope carcass
multiplied like useless inflated money
for buying phantoms from vacuums where skulls sing anthems

To agua that mummies crave and parade in dreams,
life sustained but life so desiccated it dissolves
for waste and want of agua.

Blue Child In Motion

"Blue...songs are like tattoos / you know, I've been to sea before" --Joni Mitchell "Blue"

When I was a child, I learned
that not much falls from a blue sky.
Bored by the blandly pretty and never satisfied,
I waited on storms like rescuers.

When I was a child I tossed
my minnow-thoughts to gulls I alone could see.
By the cold waters of Lake Superior one summer,
I listened for my native tongue from every shell.

Later, I'm not sure I saw myself or my spouses at all
through the bottle glass I blew with every word.
From inside whales and outside of any map,
I did find saving grace in my own restless nature.

Now, it comes to me with the red sky at night,
that the Argo and the Dutchman fly
with my childhood gulls, and if I seem melancholy or far away,
it is because I am, and have always been

this blue child in motion on the electric air of my imaginings.

When The Circus Boat Sank

When the circus boat sank
there in the sound,
both schedule and physical limitations were suspended
and everything slowed down.

Children dove to us as falling leaves
with apples in their mouths for our horses;
manes like the arms of women whose chests hum with lullabies
remembered from the drowsy south.

The tiger and I dance as months go by
and rescue loses meaning, light its immediacy.
One child has kept with us, here,
and looks to me for starfish and story.
"Once upon a time," I say to her,
"there was blue tiger, blue water, drowsy you, dreamy me."

And so the story goes,
ever blue,
ever more,
everlastingly.

If, In The Morning

If, in the morning
you wake alone,
it is because it has rained while you were sleeping--
drops suspended from pear blossoms
like fruit in dreams.

If, in the morning
you miss me,
let our love be blackbirds' feet
wrapped around stems of marsh grass.
In afternoon, the sliced loaf
drips with blackberry jam.

Blue Swans, Blue Stars

He said I was blue swans, blue stars,
a painted cup on a sill, reflected  lights in the rain.
I said I am a burning book, cinders, char.
He said I was blue swans, blue stars.
I said I am a loosened stone, gravel, tar.
He whispered, honey and  hemlock sing the same.
He said I was blue swans, blue stars,

So Much

So much depends upon
the curve of the horizon

at night

on the other side of the world.

Take it as an act of faith--
believe that your lover is there in the darkness
breathing
like sea birds on an updraft

in some harbor you've never seen.

Several of you have asked me how I am. I guess I've been scarcer than usual. My doggy, Skittles, is having some health concerns, and that, along with returning to work and all that goes with delivering mail in Michigan in February have left me little energy for composing very much. Thank you to everyone who asked after me. I'm fine, and I am working to get Skittles that way, too.

Bedtime Story

Have you ever tripped at the top of the stairs,
to find you weren't at the top of the stairs,
but in bed
startled awake?

Have you ever watched a girl in sailor dress and shoes,
a spinning ballerina in sailor dress and shoes,
on the slick rocks
by the side of the lake?

I dreamed of blonde hair spread on the water.
I dreamed I was running, screaming,
by the side of the water,

then I was awake,
destroyed and
gasping.
