(This is the second in a series of three poems for the winners of the Sunday Quiz. Today's poem is for Lynn, who sent me two striking photographs and asked me to write to the one that spoke to me most. Well, Lynn, they both spoke so clearly, I couldn't choose. Here is your poem.)
I was a long way from home.
The season was changing.
With every rustle of the breeze,
I grew older.
Day, night...
They met for dusky assignations,
Emptying into each other
Only in passing.
What was left was
A dog's ass,
A statue without ears, listening,
And a gorgeous hard city that held my tears.

Oooh FB! I like it. :) I like that you incorporated both photos into the poem. Explain the title.
ReplyDeleteHi Lynn! I'm glad you like the poem. It is called "25" because it describes something about my life when I was that age and living in San Antonio, Texas.
ReplyDelete"a gorgeous hard city that held my tears". As always, you write a perfect poem.
ReplyDeleteCool. That *is* a beautiful line "a gorgeous hard city that held my tears" - thank you for my poem, FB!
ReplyDeletenice...that whole bit for the dog's ass is just marvelous shay, love the imagery...the rest sets it up nice but that is where you shine IMHO
ReplyDeleteHow you managed to flawlessly combine the 2 photos is amazing! I love the last line! And mine's next!!!
ReplyDeleteThe dog's ass makes this ART!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! But after looking at that photo I was so sure that you'd write a poem from the point of view of the statue. Ah well, there's always next time ;-)
ReplyDelete"a gorgeous hard city that held my tears."
ReplyDeleteThat speaks to me richly!!!!!

Reminds me of young me in da city....
ReplyDeleteI agree with the majority. The last stanza is the best. You had two unusual photos to work with.
ReplyDeleteYou've made the street scenes live, and brought such genuine emotion to the shadowplay of lives moving through those cold night skies. I esp.love the night and day meeting like lovers in an illicit affair.
ReplyDeleteA prize of a poem, indeed.
Shay, I love how you made it come alive and I especially like that you wrapped the two shots into one fabulous poem.
ReplyDelete"Day, night...
ReplyDeleteThey met for dusky assignations,
Emptying into each other
Only in passing."
you took my breath away! and then the next line...
"What was left was
A dog's ass,"
you rock, Shay! i'd love to hang out in your mind for a day. {smile}

What can I say except.. I LOVE this poem!
ReplyDeleteStatues make great friends I have learned.
