25

(This is the second in a series of three poems for the winners of the Sunday Quiz. Today's poem is for Lynn, who sent me two striking photographs and asked me to write to the one that spoke to me most. Well, Lynn, they both spoke so clearly, I couldn't choose. Here is your poem.)

I was a long way from home.
The season was changing.
With every rustle of the breeze,
I grew older.

Day, night...
They met for dusky assignations,
Emptying into each other
Only in passing.

What was left was
A dog's ass,
A statue without ears, listening,
And a gorgeous hard city that held my tears.

  2. Hi Lynn! I'm glad you like the poem. It is called "25" because it describes something about my life when I was that age and living in San Antonio, Texas.

  7. Great job! But after looking at that photo I was so sure that you'd write a poem from the point of view of the statue. Ah well, there's always next time ;-)

  10. I agree with the majority. The last stanza is the best. You had two unusual photos to work with.

  11. You've made the street scenes live, and brought such genuine emotion to the shadowplay of lives moving through those cold night skies. I esp.love the night and day meeting like lovers in an illicit affair.
A prize of a poem, indeed.
