and that you could fall in love with me.
I'm a pretty billboard splashed with promises--
be the slant-boards holding me up.
She broke my heart--
I'm a big empty box full of shards.
Don't shake me, just let me be a star that doesn't move--
I do give some light, if you do all the work.
Sir Knight, I admire you truly--
broad shoulders do something to a girl, even me.
I like the careful knot of your tie, your cologne,
your starched shirt, your smile.
I'll make you laugh and feel good,
all without risking anything, because I won't feel more than fondness.
Then, just when you think we really have something,
I'll be gone, caught up by some woman
Like a kite in the wind, and as fragile.

Lord I haven't heard that song in years--love it, and his voice. This poem speaks the language of contradictions fluently--how we idealize and then discard the imperfect reality, even if it is one within ourselves more than the other. I think you've captured a lot of the way we are when young and fragile here too, caught between insecurity and the inability to settle.
ReplyDeletenice comparisons- well done!
ReplyDeleteWell done elevator feelings. Thanks for Gordon!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard that Gordon Lightfoot song, but it's a perfect companion for your poem.
ReplyDeleteYour last is tear-worthy... beyond brilliant.
I think kites are good at finding their way... Usually less fragile than they look.
ReplyDeleteLove the title, love the last line and everything in between is certainly food for thought.
ReplyDeleteEach word choice; Each line;
ReplyDeletePerfect
lovely poem. I like your take on the photo.
ReplyDeleteI accept, as my shoulders are broad, and my love for you, unquestioned! Always la la now and in the coming year, Moskowitz the Humble
ReplyDelete"gone, like a kite in the wind....." Love that. I agree with Bjorn, kites are less fragile than they look!
ReplyDeletelove the opening, and "I'll make you laugh and feel good,
ReplyDeleteall without risking anything, because I won't feel more than fondness." is refreshingly honest in its bite.
That closing line just crushes.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing in the way it relates each person's different thoughts as they share the same moment. Lovely and sad.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this song. I've heard Waylon Jennings' version of this song. Both are great.
ReplyDeletePerfectly titled!
ReplyDeleteLike a kite in the wind and as fragile.....wandering hearts always are.
