I would crave clean sheets--
Ones you slept on.
Ones like these.
I know that you
Steal out to kiss the night,
Like a somnambulist,
Hardly knowing that you do, or why.
If I were a fox,
I would trick the morning,
Shake the vole,
Hide my kits all over your rolling lawns.
When you come to yourself,
Don't disbelieve in red things, just because.
Don't dismiss the lingering feel of fur,
Of tail, of paws.
If I were a fox,
I would lie hidden in your other life--
Beyond naming,
Beyond saving,
And especially beyond laws.

for One Shot Wednesday 49
I've read this twice, once out loud, just for the sheer pleasure of the words and the way you've plaited them into this shining braid of red, then for the sad but wild contents. I love to see what the feral girl does when she comes out to play.
ReplyDeletei like tail, fur and paws...err...playful, sensual...ah...and sounds so sweet to the ears...
ReplyDeleteLaw abiding foxes are never fun and not all can write to save their fur being cat-dog. hehe This one does sound sweet to the ears.
ReplyDeletewho needs laws when there is a fox about.. called SHAY?
ReplyDelete... beware of this sweet heart!
:-)
What do you mean "if," chica?? ;)
ReplyDeletea creative way of writing - i enjoy reading your posts~
ReplyDeleteThe first and third stanza were my favorites---for different reasons.
ReplyDeleteI love the ideas that the word "fox" brings to mind.
Dearest FireBlossom,
ReplyDeleteI never dreamed that you could fit the word Somnombulist in a such a beautifully Vixenesque Masterpiece!
You pulled it off baby.....G

Another wild child gem. I so love it. "If I were a fox I would lie hidden in your other life". It can be lonely, being a fox. I love your poem!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous redhead as a sleek fox in a beautiful poem. I love it!
ReplyDeleteespecially beyond laws.
ReplyDeleteIleana stole my comment !
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean "IF"?
If you were a fox,
you'd be called Shay :-)
I'll admit that I had to look up the word "somnambulist".
ReplyDelete...was I the only one?
LOL... I had to look it up too Herman. Such a fancy word for something so simple... man I love words:-) Great write!!
ReplyDeleteA real pleasure to read..enjoyed it very much! :)
ReplyDeleteAhhhh that fox so adept at ...
ReplyDeleteShay you got that word thing going - all I see is red!
I've been trying to trick the morning for years ...
ReplyDeleteYou are my favourite trickster. Love this one - Fox, or not...
ReplyDelete"You know you're a cute little heartbreaker, foxy..."
ReplyDeleteThis "feral girl" trope is such a magnificent myth -- it gives you the template of an entire wilderness to lay over everyday life. It also reminds me that we are much, much more the animal of appetite and survival and procreation than out mommies and daddies tried to civilize out of us. I always tread respectfully round the edges of your poems, wary of straying too close to your attention. Shhhhh. - Brendan
ReplyDeleteYou're stiring up some myths here - totally cool poem - a gem.
ReplyDeletelove this love this foxy lady!
ReplyDeleteThe lure of the wild ginger haired, the glitter there of green in the eye, the wildness that seeks the word in her fur. Bait is strong, she should be wary of your trap.
ReplyDelete"I know that you
ReplyDeleteSteal out to kiss the night,
Like a somnambulist,
Hardly knowing that you do, or why."
Simply brilliant! I loved the whole experience of reading this skilfully crafted poem. Also love the photo. Wish I'd taken it.
Thanks so much for sharing. James.
But you're not. Or are you? xj
ReplyDeleteLike "hedgewitch," I read this several times just because it's fun to read. I like the first lines in the second and fourth verse...
ReplyDelete"I know you"
"When you come to yourself,"
I love that last line!
ReplyDeleteI really like this. The rhythm is smooth and the "fox" metaphor delightful!
