love song

when the moon shines
off the backs of my eyes,
it makes the whole room as bright as noon to me;
and so if i can't stop myself
just can't stop myself from watching your dreams,
you must forgive me, darling,
don't be like the others and scream.

and when my claws draw back
into the black softness of my toes,
believe me when i say you are the only one who knows me
knows me this way,
and though it's true i kill, it's never just for fun;
please believe me, sweetheart,
don't be like the others and run.

my instincts are my angels and my angels say
this one is the one to love at any cost;
i have to have someone i can close my eyes and lay with,
someone i can hold my breath and dare to trust.

when the sun goes hot and high
and your dreams go dry,
i will be the shadow that comes when you need it most;
there will be those who will warn you
that i will tear you, wound you, down to the bone,
but don't believe them, darling,
don't be like the others i've known.

my instincts are my angels and my angels say
this is the one to love and shelter if she stays;
but darling, oh sweetheart, i just don't know what i might do
if you're like the others and start to run away.

  1. To love a predator is to love life itself: the precious core, the passionate blood, the beating heart.

  2. "Down to the bone" I love this poem. (The photo is way cool, too.)

  3. That's some dangerous lovin' there! But also quite exciting.

  4. Trust is the frailest instinct, don't you think? So easily irrupted and fled from. Maybe it's not even an instinct, but a response of heart counter to the main fight/flight rail we live by. With animals there's no guile; their appetites simple are; with humans you never can quite know. And what intimate power, to have such latent claws whose very nature is for ripping throats, and yet keep them retracted as to soothe a lover's brow. The human animal's a weird one, huh. -- Brendan

  5. nice shay...for me it is the yearning for them not to be like the others...not to run away from the narator that holds the emotional line for me...

    I love the passionate voice. You captured the "beast" within you very well. And cool pic too ~

  8. Brilliantly chilling, Shay. To run or not to run -- what would be the best fate, the worst?

  9. Good one, Shay... such strong emotion and visual acuity! Sometimes it is the thrill of the chase.

  10. Love is as red in tooth and claw as Nature, which isn't too surprising since Nature lives is its heart and soul. Yet at the heart of love is restraint, giving, not rending, feeding the other from your own hard, harrowing kills...anyway, I think you get to the beating heart of it all here.

  12. Very cool poem. I think the only problem with loving a predator is the danger of being eaten alive if things go badly. Still, quite exciting right up to that point.

  22. Seductive and threatening...I ♥ it!

  23. The vibe I get from this is a wild thing trying at being gentle. If the lover recoils or shows fear then the beasts true nature will return. Sort of a black Grimm's fairy tale.

  24. I had to come back for another read. NO ONE writes like you do, kiddo. We are so lucky to read you every day! Seriously.
