Donostia

Teacher says that every time a bell rings
she is awakened in the night and lies there
remembering the bay at San Sebastian.

The stars in the sky there are local,
drifting up from modest houses in Loiola.
They are as close as cats on a sill
and are able to both warm and wound.

Teacher says that when her heart beats,
she cannot sleep, recalling the day of drums--
the Tamborrada, and the clouds that gathered
in search of their pilfered thunder.

During the Aste Nagusia, or Big Week.
La Concha Bay is home to stilt walkers wearing
huge papier mâché heads. The calm waters
are like mothers who knew these giants as babies.

Teacher says that there was a man there,
or a woman, or an enchantment she cannot describe.
Perhaps all three, a trinity born of sangria, celebration,
and one bell beneath the drumbeat, a ringing bird.

On these recent nights, far from the Basque country,
she is startled by her doppelganger lying awake beside her.
The lesson she cannot teach is that neither knew of the other,
though the invitation was always there, a tongue in the bell,

Like an arrow in the flesh of a saint or an invitation
to La Concha Bay, and the days to be lived beyond it.

In Camera

"
You've got to remain to bein' yourself... you cannot be

Nobody else, it ain't no use tryin' bein' no whirlwind

An' uh, jumpin' here an' an' playin' checkers with

Your own life, that ain't gonna work, baby..."  --Propher Omega

The mirror is running a con.
No reflection or meat-suit can tell you who you are.
Yes you, in disguise there. You are
a sparrow flown straight from the hand of God.

You are a bulb that wants its light back,
but you are the light.
It's the bulb that struts in its brittle body
voguing like it thought you up.

We have come through the looking glass,
in costume, in camera, incognito,
even to ourselves. We wander lanes of traffic like amnesiacs,
dreamers who show up naked and unprepared, in a panic of shame

for a test we have already taken and passed.

Ash

Ash is blind and boneless, but flies.
Colored flames flare the leaf that dies.
For a moment, the madman lucid.
Sweet milk in the sun turns putrid.

The bonfire kills the thing it lights.
Ash is blind and boneless, but flies.
You may find that devils may care
To catch and keep you with them there.

The young may sigh, slow, and sicken
to find their tongues gray and thickened.
Ash is blind and boneless, but flies.
A snare denies its bird the skies.

Don't be so proud, sure and boasting.
See the rooster, plucked and roasting.
The grave may loose the one who dies.
Ash is blind and boneless, but flies.

Patos Extraños

We are odd ducks, motherless

full of gunpowder and honey.

We see everything onrushing,

through the prism of a bus windscreen,

drinking to stop the chatter,

always bumming a dollar and then drawing on it,

turning it otherworldly, gorgeous, useless.

Dead brothers rise up from their graves

as we try to have dinner, watch tv.

"They're weird," say the women

in their housedresses and galoshes,

whose dreams are unyielding as can openers.

A woman is expected to be beautiful,

a man stoic.

Where does that leave us?

Gauguin never came around again after the thing with the ear.

Mothers die, Lorca wants to kiss you,

and Diego fucks everything that's not nailed down.

We live in a snow globe inside a tornado funnel.

We are divine strays

leaving tracks on new sidewalk,

ducking thrown shoes from a holy or profane hand.

Here we are in Vinnie's car,

seeing swirls and jagged edges,

bizarre permutations and fields of flowers

in some cop's mirror shades.

The New Mexico night seems to bless us

as the cop lets us off with a warning,

his common brand of gibberish

as foreign to us as ours is to him.

Ass

The President of the United States has something up his ass.
He addresses the nation:
"I have something up my ass."
Someone shines a light.
"Can you see," asks the President, "what is up my ass?"

The President of the United States cannot find his head.
He addresses the nation:
"We have Antifa and radical Democrats to blame for this."
Still, there is something up the President's ass.
Surrogates clarify:
"The President has golden rose-scented freedom bombs up his ass."

The President of the United States cannot find Colorado or his ass
with a map and both tiny hands.
What could be up his ass?
A rocket, to power his golf cart?
A monkey, to whisper in his ear?
A member of Congress, in its cozy nest?
"I have something up my ass," says the President of the United States.
What could it be?
