Bird Watching

grackle, expounding

A cowbird and grackle were in disagreement
over a definition of terms.
Astride a dead sparrow, its small breast pierced,
the grackle explained this action
in terms of disbursement of seeds.

The cowbird objected, arguing that the grackle
was a cheat, ending a life
already in progress and pointed to the ashen sparrow,
non-renewable, lying still
as a stone and twice as useless.

Don't get holy with me cowbird, scoffed the grackle.
You're nothing but a flim-flam bird
and a deadbeat parent, letting the other raise your brood
by knocking the originals
out of the nest like so many shucked hulls.

Murderer! they both cried, each to the other with scorn.
The grackle strutted about,
proud and righteous, while the cowbird sang the faux
river in its throat,
that beautiful false flow from which none may drink.

I saw all this from my window, an avian stage play
with knives and subterfuge.
All day until dusk I turned over the problem of who
was in the right, but was interrupted
by a million starlings screaming for either, or both,

or just to hear their own voices in cacophony as the
weary sun gave up the yard to shadows and moonlight.

for Word Garden Word List--Richard Wilbur.

The cowbird leaves its eggs in other birds' nests; the hatchlings shove the parent bird's eggs out and run the parent ragged feeding the cowbird chicks who are often much larger than the bird's own chicks would have been. Also, the adult cowbird can make a sound that sounds like gurgling water. You can hear it here:

As for the grackle, they are sometimes bad neighbors at the feeder, stabbing smaller birds with their beaks or raiding other birds' nests and killing the babies. They don't always do this, but sometimes they do. I have been feeding the birds for over 20 years and there have only been one or two years when the grackles were like that, but when they are, they're relentless.

Hipster

Hipster is watching,
as you fumble along in life.

Every time you wear last year's ensemble.
Every time you post last year's viral meme.
Every time you use last year's catch phrase.

Hipster is watching
as you turn bland and boneless as butter
tasteless as tap water
dreary as a rainy Monday in flyover country.

Hipster is watching
and is pained,
but plays
Ask Me Now
flawlessly,
the keys reflected cool as cubes in a mai tai
across his
impassive
Sogreto
shades.

His Ask Me Now is a notoriously difficult piece to play.

A Witch's Instructional

This is what it means to be La Bruja, the witch--
(swab honey on your ears before I speak, or they will curl like dry leaves.)
It isn't like people think,
from storybooks and bullshit they've heard.
It's like this--
a candleflame-colored Moon rising
through dreams and trees
into night sky, and not nearly so distant as it seems.

If you are La Bruja, you must barter with every wild thing--
taking some of each, as they keep some of you.
Sorters appear,
you know the ones...
made of hair spray and bibles, scared of the dark,
rattling on about their birth right.
You will kill them,
whether you choose to or not; whether you feel good about it or not.
Ah well.

There will be those who come into the trees,
even into your dreams,
to avenge what you've done while you were sleeping,
walking the stick path,
or baying at the moon.
All I can tell you is, wear a long cloak,
keep moving to the stone-feather pulse inside you,
and know the Moon saves her favor for you, not dwarves or fools.

Dolly

You dismiss us;
me and Dolly.
"Run along to your room," you say.
"Stay there...all night. All day."

You think we don't know
that you crawl with every loathsome perversion
of flesh and spirit.
You believe that Dolly and I don't see it.

Fine. We will whisper over our tea set,
cups as delicate as a veneer.
We'll discuss you, you know, and send anonymous notes
to Mrs. Muffington, the police, and in the pockets of strangers' coats.

Dolly says your lungs are weak.
You stumble when you walk. Cough when you speak.
"Hello," we'll say, "Hello, what's this?"
as you lie on the floor we'll give you a kiss.

Dismiss us once more.
Wave your hand airily.
Say, "Go talk to your doll!"
but...

my doll talks to me.

Two Ways Of Courting Lorelei

I gave Lorelei the usual sweets--
she cursed the stuff and spat;

I charmed the birds down from the trees--
Lorelei played the cat.

I hid my heart, denied desire,
and waited where I sat

to hypnotize, but Lorelei's
too wise, by half, for that.
