The Last Gangster

The last gangster wears a felt fedora and a bathrobe,

Shuffling towards the dining hall with his cane.

The orderlies all look like G-men and call him "Pops."

The nurses are pinched and damp with antiseptic,

Nothing like the swell dames he used to know!

There are paintings on the walls--

Sailboats and pastoral scenes;

What's that crap all about?

Oh how he'd love to have the shuttle bus driver bring around a big fat Doozy instead,

He'd stand on the running board and his cane would be a tommy gun!

Budda budda budda budda!

Eat lead ya dirty rats!

"What're you smilin' about, Pops?" asks an orderly.

The last gangster points at him with his cane and says, "You look like Melvin Purvis."

Budda budda!

Ha!

  1. Hey Pops, shoot him before he shoots you, or shoots himself.

  3. Your first lines are always soooo intriguing. You wouldn't even have had to any further for me to love this, yet you did. And I was right there with you every step of the way.

  4. I'm such a looser I had to look up who Melvin Purvis was :P. I imagined the last gangster looking like Hugh Hefner, but with a fedora.

  5. Shrinky, felt fedora hats look wayyyyyy better on us than on the guys. I've got one, too! PREEN. It's nice to see you back, and thank you for your kind words. :-)

I'm glad you liked it Jannie. I think that people tend to forget that old men are still men. So says the resident non-expert on men LOL.

Ha! Grace, that's how I pictured him, too! Girlfriend please, you are so not a loser. Melvin P. is just kind of moth ball-y. Here's another tidbit: the automobile pictured and mentioned in the poem is a Duesenberg, the inspiration for the word "doozy"! How neat is that? I want one, with a driver, too!

  6. I love this. I used to work in geriatrics, and I'm pretty sure that I took care of this guy!
