Detroit is
my heart my home
MCDC going for it
Detroit is
done burning now it's lit
Motown and Greta Van Fleet
Detroit is
Greektown where the people eat
grit! that's right!
Detroit is
Detroit vs. Everybody fight!
coney dogs from Lafayette
Detroit is
what you work for is what you get
the Freep, DIA, this poem,
Detroit is
my place, my heart, my home.

I love the spirit of Detroit. May it continue to rise.
ReplyDeleteI'll never go to Detroit, but you brought the city to me in you poem, Shay.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this vibrant spirit of Detroit. Thank you for sharing this Shay. A befitting reply to that 2016 Rotterdam art exhibition. 👍
ReplyDeleteThis poem makes me want to go to Detroit. I have been to Michigan, but never there. I like 'what you work for is what you get.'
ReplyDeleteIf you've been raised in the contradiction of prosperity, diversity and struggle that runs through a tough Midwestern city like Detroit (or Chicago) it's almost impossible to convey all that it is under the skin to an outsider. So many influences, so much hard work, so many tears, so much beauty and achievement and fighting spirit, and you give us all of that here. I would never go back to Chicago, but neither will I ever be ashamed of it. We are the melting pot, the salad bar, and the alchemist's crucible that proves the Phoenix rises from his own ashes. All this and more so well said here, Shay.
ReplyDeleteI like the rhythm and love the art. Sounds like a rough and ready kind of place,, when I thought it was a city in decay. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYou make me want to visit - Jae
ReplyDeleteI'm reminded of the "Detroit Rock City" song by Kiss. And, as you've illustrated here, it is. I also think of kitties, lol. Tigers and Lions, that is! I love the spirit of this anthem-like poem.
ReplyDeleteI feel your passion for Detroit. I've never been but it seems to be an extraordinary place. You really made it come alive for me. Suzanne - Wayfaring blog - Wordpress
ReplyDeleteDefiant Detroit! I liked it when visited it a couple of decades ago, and the people I met there were fantastic!
ReplyDeleteGood to know Detroit is . . . ALIVE. I feel, I feel, I feel the VIBE!! When it's written up about like you've written it up, perhaps the news of its death has been greatly exaggerated. :)
ReplyDeleteShay, I love this!!!!! As an outlier of the outlying (the greater Metro area), Detroit was always "The City".
