Cowgirl's Lament

Yippee yi o
and ki yi yay
I've got just one
more thing to say--
Please don't let me
die here all alone.

Across the mesa
and through the pass
Old Scratch has gone and
nailed my ass--
Please don't let me
die here all alone.

Around the campfire
with beer and beans
Who knows what the
hell it means--
Please don't let me
die here all alone.

Kiss me, cowboy
and trim the wick
Had no notion
I was even sick
Please don't let me
die here all alone.

Here's a letter
here's my will
The night is silent
sweet and still--
Please don't let me
die here all alone.

No List today--under the weather. Back next week.

  1. Cowgirl - it ain't nothing that beans can't fix,
and singing Home on the Range.
Soon you'll be up to your usual tricks,
And the stars will not look so strange!

  3. Mortality is a haunting chorus here, a contrast to the images of life and its fleeting comforts that are lost in the he devil's wind across the mesa. Emptiness without peace, and the downside of solitude cast their cold shadows here, no matter how bright and warm the campfire. Vivid writing Shay. Sent a chill up my spine.

  4. Your poem took me back to the 50's and songs just like this on the radio. Tumbling tumbleweed, the brown hills and mesas of my childhood.........and that feeling one has as we age, as Hedge says, the downside of solitude. Hope you feel better soon. Rest well.

  5. This has the perfect "Home on the Range" vibe. Hope you're up and ropin' about soon, Calamity Shay!

  6. I agree with Jennifer about the "Home on the Range" vibe. I could see this being sung, accompanied by a guitar, sitting around a campfire. And I think it expresses something universal.... no one wants to die alone! Get well soon, Shay.

  7. Sorry you're under the weather. I thought last week's prompt was for this week so I wrote from the list. It isn't my usual writing so maybe it is a good thing it will stay unread. :) Take care of yourself.

    1. It was never meant to be light hearted but most people took it that way.
