When You Love a Doomed Thing

When you love a doomed thing
you know from the start that the wind will win.

Friends say, can't you feel
the tremble, can't you see the lean?

but love is a bird that can only do as birds do
until the day it dies.

There is a fire and split inside me now
with no mercy--the ash bird eats my heart as I knew it would.

When you love a doomed thing
you know from the start that the wind will win.

  1. I love the title. Smiles. Yes, this is sad - "but love is a bird that can only do as birds do." No one writes like you. This poem goes deeply in.

  2. Powerful in its single vision, plaintive in its voice and utterly devastating in its truth. Fine(and for me, very relatable) writing, Shay.

  3. The walnut tree and the bird that took comfort in it -- Was doom written in their blood? Only the wind knows. I only know that while they are, they shine their shine, leaves, poems, beauty, life.
