Self Portrait in Red and White

I was just out of the hospital. It was snowing,
and my spirit was leading my body around
like an old dog
on a long leash.

Nurses are funny creatures, kissing the glass
of the locked cabinet as if it held a month in the country
where fountains flow patients
to the bathroom by themselves.

As a child, I lay in the snow sideways to the sky
and believed I would always have a place to go,
full of tomato soup
and rag rugs for the floors.

That day, though, I was just out of the hospital
and been beaten up besides, for the fun of it
by someone younger
with healthy fists.

Bent like a damaged tree with red leaves,
I fell into a cab and got the stink eye from
a driver concerned
about his upholstery.

At the hotel, in my sixth floor room, I kissed
the mirror above the sink. It was cold and smooth
with always that little
gap denying contact.

With my prescription lost, real pain embraced me,
saying, write about the red of the blood and the white
of the weather,
the gray of cement and concussion.

I wrote the red of a fire welcomed by wood, a white bird
on a black branch outside the window from a warm bed
and a day that ended
years ago where I mended, more or less,

I still have that poem, a good one, full of the best of me,
a beautiful thing
still whole and fine
and standing on its own
when all the rest has gone.

Self Portrait

There's someone in here,
inside my
skin,
someone Frankensteined
up from a girl
I used to be or
never was
or
someone on a greased slide
to the boneyard
(yep, that was
me)
but she got
off at
El Paso
sweet little woman get along.

See, I'm living for two
now,
preggers with myself
and way
overdue
but we're cute af
in certain light
or in
my imagination
or
in the sight of God
with a
heave
and a
ho
I just couldn't let her go.

Poet

What I'm talking about is an ailment of spirit,
an ennui of the heart.
It is not so much a seeking after angels
as a naming of devils.

Though these devils may sometimes be native,
most are introduced
like curare-tainted crosses slipped under our pillows
to teethe on at night.

We wobble into daylight, bright as fevers,
the lovely stricken
who learn to trick demons lazy for years or hours
or just the next blessed moment.

The well is poisoned, yes, but the hallucinations are rare,
butterflies of the injured mind.
We see loves bringing roses that are really lilies
for us discarded, already dead.

We are the gorgeous idiots, God's blind swans searching
for the blossoming branch,
mistaking the loaded barrel for Gilead's balm and leaving poems there
rolled, with ribbons, like answered prayers.

Song of the Chimera

The blackbirds are dying and sing their death
from stump and steeple, barrel and rail.
The police are called every time it snows
and they maunder in the fields, dithery and pale.
I have seen the Chimera
and your barn is burning down.
She is lion, goat and snake
and your barn is burning down.

Morning appears and suffers a scalding dew.
There is a killer hiding where the lilacs grew
beside the porch of the rectory he burns and claims
the Chimera is you, and you, and you.
I have smelt the Chimera.
Her skin is fragrant with misery and death.
In the ashes, I have smelt the Chimera.
Her skin is fragrant with misery and death.

In the field stands the papier-mache president.
His is the pomp of smoke house and sty.
The postman delivers catastrophes ill-sent
as the blackbirds call, and falter, and die.
There was love, some say
kept in jars on an old woman's counter.
The gloomy blackbirds beg her for rest,
rest in jars, there on her counter.

There is no more clattering, no good book held high.
There are weeds in the window box, crackling dry.
The killer is hiding where the lilacs grew
telling fools their fortunes from a blackbird's eye.
I have seen the Chimera
coming fast through the dawn
with seven devils to drive her
the Chimera drives on.

Painted Meat Envelope

The painted meat envelope in its gauzy cocoon
opened its food hole to show its bone rows,

Charming the larger meat envelope, who vocalized:

You're the most beautiful bride ever, Gina."

Persephone

Sexy Persephone, not that anyone would know.

Hades keeps the lights off, the room too warm.

Her children howl from nightmares Morpheus leaves low

like suns going down at the base of the spine.

Restless Persephone, gone bitchy in the ashy shadows,

escapes to fenced April, daughter of deities.

She's a woman, she bears worlds purple with jacaranda,

wisteria, yellow-eyed pansies and Queen-of-the-Nights.

Circumscribed Persephone, prisoner of fence and filigree,

no Ubers in the Underworld, though taxis crowd the tarmac

from city to jungle to ice cap, gathering thick ten feet away,

carrying businessmen dry as last month's paper left on a sill.

Persephone, I ride on your skin, behind your lids,

trapped as you are, wishing myself fecund as you are,

as frayed, as foxy, as fenestrated, a thing unto ourselves,

rising like spring stems garlanding a world denied.

Persephone, we lie in tandem in a dark grave, like butterflies.

Patos Extraños

We are odd ducks, motherless

full of gunpowder and honey.

We see everything onrushing,

through the prism of a bus windscreen,

drinking to stop the chatter,

always bumming a dollar and then drawing on it,

turning it otherworldly, gorgeous, useless.

Dead brothers rise up from their graves

as we try to have dinner, watch tv.

"They're weird," say the women

in their housedresses and galoshes,

whose dreams are unyielding as can openers.

A woman is expected to be beautiful,

a man stoic.

Where does that leave us?

Gauguin never came around again after the thing with the ear.

Mothers die, Lorca wants to kiss you,

and Diego fucks everything that's not nailed down.

We live in a snow globe inside a tornado funnel.

We are divine strays

leaving tracks on new sidewalk,

ducking thrown shoes from a holy or profane hand.

Here we are in Vinnie's car,

seeing swirls and jagged edges,

bizarre permutations and fields of flowers

in some cop's mirror shades.

The New Mexico night seems to bless us

as the cop lets us off with a warning,

his common brand of gibberish

as foreign to us as ours is to him.

Courtship On The Edge Of The World

The girl whose face was time
was sought after for love, though she was immune.
Sailors dashed their splintering ships at her feet
and crawled the carapace of the rising moon.

Beauty is the star-marker, the sailors called,
and your visage the horizon we perish to unfurl.
She scoffed and said, my face is a mask
and you a troupe of clambering fools.

Behold, behind you, infinity spread!
cried the sailors as one, then fell down dead.

Dropping the guise, the girl confessed
my face is a cipher, the void my nightdress.

The Thing That Was Created

Among the rolled up plans,
the coffee mugs,
the beakers,

there was one thing which was not like the others

because
it was alive.

At first, the thing that had been created was the object
of much lively discussion,
amusement and
conjecture

until it demonstrated that it was dangerous.

Then they
wanted to kill it, but it
wanted its life as much as they wanted theirs,
as much as I want mine
and you want yours.

It fought
and was denounced;
it killed
and was set upon by its very creators.

Among the observers, both lay and professional,
the officers of the court
and those accusing and accused, judging and judged,

there was one which was not like the others

because
the bloody thing,
howling and unhuman,

alone among them all,
was innocent.

Ambition

I am not the girl for you.
Mornings and evenings,
I am lost in the roil and flock of myself.

Here is the hungry
coming out from me,
motion by slim margins denied.

I'm all sharp looks,
resenting restraint,
ready to die
if by dying I rise.

Do you think
you're the sky?
You look to me like a stick on strings,
a store-bought bell.

I weigh
nothing,
amount to
nothing,

like love, or thermals.
But instinct drives me,
driven spiral-mad to know

That the rodent heartbeat of my inborn ambition
is out there,
stirring the leaves,
heading for its hole,

While I strain and scream,
knowing I can never spot it
from here.

Lost Birds

Lost birds, soft as smoke
fly above a dry burning land--
they don't stop to rest in bare black trees--
lost birds come straight to your hand.

Lady gentle as the touch of death,
so beautiful, like a lost bird's song--
they sing, so sure you're their homeward star--
but they're wrong, those birds, lost and wrong.

Lost bird finds out when you stroke its wing--
lost bird lost Heaven, lost everything.

I've seen how you make fruit from flower
and leave a stem curling brown on the branch--
I've seen how you look at the ripening rows--
and the barbs on the fence where the night birds catch.

Lost birds come all the way from Mexico
caught in crosswinds east then south--
all just to bring you a Spanish song
from a lost bird's throat to your calico's mouth.

Lost birds lose whatever they bring--
lose sky, lose Heaven, lose everything.
