Bell The Cat

Bell the cat, bolt the door, burn the welcome mat.
Shade the sun, don't tell anyone, and when you're done with that,

Tongue the bell as magpies coin the language she'd have licked
the honey from, til day is done and drowsed and silly and sick;

Promise her you love her more than Terpsichore and then
her fading scent will pay the rent when she has gone again.

  2. "Bell the cat." Ha. Well, I don't mind if I do.

    Love this:
    "Shade the sun, don't tell anyone, and when you're done with that,
    Tongue the bell as magpies"

    And this:
    "her fading scent will pay the rent"

    What a stinky little kitty she must be.

  3. I read this and for some reason Galen springs to mind, and how he might have replied, and damn if I don't miss him, and thank you for however weirdly obliquely bringing him to mind with this belled cat ~

  5. You have such a gift for distilling things down to their most potent combinations, Shay. Here, the incantation brings back not just the taste, but the force, of longing and desire, and the impossibility of domesticating it. I also love the cadence, which skips so innocently along that the spell is wound before the mind is finished savoring it.
