There You Are, Little Sparkler

"You are everyone to me,"
said Caligula, and he gave me a scarf
to hide the hickeys--
when you split with a devil
it gets tricky
not to fall apart.

Spending Christmas at Joan of Arc's
with real saints, a faux fire
and presence under the tree--
I can't think exactly which to do
for truth or dare
except to keep my tail clear of the rocking chair.

Joan's guest room smells like
balsam and baguettes
and oh you crusty evergreen--
who's the fairest
of them all?
Who's so full of shyness
that she can't steal on down the hall?
That Frenchy firework, me
mais oui.

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty's real name was Veronica and she was doing just fine,
wearing silver bangles and selling crafts and woodwork and stuff
from her shop on the corner of Cool and Funky.

Then this prince kisses her
like maybe he was running for office
cos he kept saying "baby...baby!"
despite the fact that she was 23 and curvy as a mountain road.

Well, after that she just couldn't stay awake.
She'd sway between the displays, knocking stuff over and mumbling.
The prince kept calling,
but that just made her worse--
she curled up in the window and made the cat run the store.

Pretty soon her voice mail filled up.
"Ronnie? It's mom. Are you okay?"
She wasn't. Never had a kiss bored a woman so thoroughly.
The cat tried to help by jumping on her,
and dropping toys on her face, but nothing could stir her.

Then one day, Ronnie's friend Chloe,
the serial killer from the coffee shop next door, stopped in.
"Oh fudge," she said as she took in the conked out chica.
So she went next door and got the Succubus,
and together they each took an arm across their shoulder
and dragged the bored babe over to Danny's.

God the waitress took one look and put on a fresh pot.
Ronnie's cat came strolling in the open door and sat down licking its paw,
knowing that everything would be all right now.
Later, deep in conversation with the kitten Giuseppe Verdi,
he revealed what had happened.
God, who speaks Cat, heard the whole thing.

Wouldn't you know, just at that moment,
here comes the prince, flashing his pearly whites,
but he barely had time to duck before a hail of napkin dispensers came his way.
The Queen of the Vampires, in black panther form, leaped
and bowled over old Princey, then dragged him out the door with her teeth.
Chloe the serial killer stood in the front window,
smirking and waggling a sign that read,
"Danny's reserves the right to refuse service to anyone."

Anyway, I'm happy to say that the Danny's girls
were able to bring Ronnie back from the edge.
They sure are hip, ain't they?

So, Merry Christmas from God and Denise (waitresses), The Queen of the Vampires, the Succubus, Chloe, The Dark-Haired Chick, Savanna the Teenage Runaway, the kitten Giuseppe Verdi, and everyone at Danny's Coffee Shop!

Morrigan Visits Target

Morrigan goes to Target, the day after Halloween.
On the way,
she hits Kelly Clarkson with her Subaru.
Morrigan appears in the form of a crow on the singer's shoulder.
"Aw, sugar pea," she sighs,
"no more dance shit out of you."

Modern life does not agree with Morrigan.
At Target,
she stands with her head tilted,
looking at an inflatable creche peopled with Peanuts characters;
a dog wearing a scarf represents the Christ.

Later, in her cave,
Morrigan contemplates all that she has seen.
In the old days,
There were oracles, vengeful goddesses,
and weird animal/human hybrids
filled with fury and purpose.

Now, there are singing snowmen wearing top hats,
sounding like Burl Ives.

Morrigan declares war on Target.
She animates the shopping carts and they advance in a phalanx,
demolishing displays,
sending snow globes to explode on the floor like bombs.
Briefly, she considers building a sacrificial pyre,
and causing all of the low rise jeans to take wing in a frenzy of self-immolation.

But, no.

Instead, she turns the assistant manager's vest into a block of ice
and sends him skidding out of the freight doors in the back.

Morrigan fills the changing room mirrors with terrifying visions
of writhing snakes and centipedes,
then turns the tongues of those shoppers who send out Christmas brag sheets into scorpions.
The tension lines on Morrigan's face begin to ease.

Her mood improved,
she enables zombie Kelly Clarkson to become a checker
in the only open lane.
A disturbing chanting issues from her mouth as she rings up and then attacks unwary shoppers
as they yammer on cell phones
or dig for their debit cards.
Her victims litter the check-out,
and spill, horrifyingly, into the greeting card aisle.

The store in shambles,
the hourly-wage Santa wandering blank-eyed and gibbering,
Morrigan turns her attention to the jewelry case.

There, she sees her girlfriend,
dangling a Celtic cross on a delicate gold chain from her equally delicate and beautiful fingers.
"Honey!" sighs Morrigan.
"Baby!" replies the girlfriend. "Look what I bought ya."

And so,
as the late Kelly Clarkson screeches out something that might be singing, but might not,
the two lovebirds stand amid the murdered plastic reindeer and the smoking, ruined, kitschy racks of holiday sweaters,
and a very smitten Morrigan says to the Dark-Haired Chick,
"How did you know it was me?"
She smirks and answers, "You did this last year, remember? I mean, duh."

Then the Dark-Haired Chick says, "Watch your hair, baby," and puts the Celtic cross and chain around Morrigan's--the QOTV's--neck.
"I love Christmas," says the Queen of the Vampires, happy as a crow in corn country.
"I know, baby," says her girl, rolling her eyes, but smiling. "I know."

The Constancy Of The Moon

Christmas bells rang my head--
to,
fro,
or maybe it was just the Colt 45.

The moon used to cradle me in her curve while I slept--
she always whispered,
"Little girl,
take this silver dollar
and buy a ticket home to me."

Texas Jim rang my head--
to,
fro,
or maybe it was just the December wind.

I would leave here, head south,
if only I could stand up.

The moon used to cradle me in her curve while I slept--
she always whispered,
"Little girl,
take this silver dollar
and buy a ticket home to me."

Christmas bells ring my head--
to,
fro,
echoing in the alley between the churches--
I would come to Jesus
sure enough,
if only I could stand up.

999 and counting/ Merry Christmas from Shay

Dear Readers,

I'm a little bit early, but you know how I get about rules. And so, Merry Christmas to all of you, and thank you sincerely for visiting my Word Garden and for reading what I create. I wish each and every one of you love and warmth in this, the holiday season.

The Word Garden Complaint Department, open every third Tuesday of even numbered months, from 3 a.m. until 3:15 a.m., has received a small complaint. I'm all over it! The complaint was this: Reader X would like me to step out from behind the curtain more often, show myself, dish a little.

Okay.

I deliver the mail. I'm tall (5'-11"). I wrote poetry between the ages of 18 and 26, then took a twenty year break before taking up the Bic again in 2006. I collect stuffed raccoons and coyotes. I also like Coke bears. I am currently spending huge gobs of my spare time watching dvd's of the old Mary Tyler Moore show. "Mister Grant!" lol. I can make almost anyone laugh, except my mother. I spoil my dog, Bosco, rotten. I am prone to moods.

But, back to Christmas. I was raised a Christian, but am emphatically not one anymore. Something about being bludgeoned with it and told I'm going to Hell for who I am and who I love. Take that stuff and stick it.

And yet...from the vivid dream I had in my twenties, about being visited by a beautiful angel and shown Heaven (so that I would know there was something more), to the prayer that did what no other power could do, which was to to allow me to stay sober for one more day (which has now grown to 26 years), God, or Goddess as I prefer to think of Her, has been a constant in my life.

And so, in this season of Christmas, I share this video with you. It does things to me. Maybe you will like it too. Then, please come back Tuesday for a special 1,000th Word Garden post. I just wish I had the faintest idea what to do for that!

Peace,

Shay Caroline

Darling, It's Christmas

Darling, It's Christmas
Just take a peek out the frosty window
See our friends and neighbors
Coming together around their damaged cars
And exchanging blows

It's Christmas and once a year
We do these things
We hate
We hate
We hate
Put up the tree, string up the lights
Throw the rope over the cross beam
It's Christmas, it's finally here

Spending money I haven't got
Buying people I don't like
Things they'll never use--
Oh honey look
This one's for you

It's Christmas, and once a year
We pray at church
For the blessed thing to be over
Everyone's seething
Nobody's sober
Holly berries are poison
Come on over

Holiday hymns we take up
Until the police are called to break up
Another family Christmas
With the brandished cake knives
And the ruined lives
Oh,
Merry Christmas, darling
Of course you're fine to drive.

The Unfortunate Subscription

The sister in law brought it on herself. That's what the woman told the police just after the fat one had placed his great mitt on top of her head and pushed her down into the back seat of the cruiser,

As if she were a prank snake being jammed back into its can.

The guests' faces are striped with red and blue, from the flashing gumball machines on the police cars, or from

Blood and apoplexy, who can say?

Santa bears have been knocked off the stairs and lay gaping on their backs in the front yard,

While the figures in the nativity scene appear pale and shocked.

The sister in law had been saying:

My Frank received a substantial bonus this year.

We're going snorkeling in the Azores.

Bobby was accepted at both Yale and Stanford.

We're all on diets.

Madison has decided on pre-med.

We're just busy busy busy! she'd added with a little chuckle and toss of her head, as if the cute charm of it all had invisibly nudged her slightly sideways.

The fat cop prompts:

So that was when you attacked her?

Yes.

What weapon did you use?

A rolled-up Redbook. It had holiday cookies on the cover. They were supposed to depict each of the eight reindeer.

Reindeer?

Yes. If you made twenty-four cookies, there would be three of each reindeer.

The cop writes this down, then says,

That sounds more like Good Housekeeping than Redbook.

I want a lawyer, says the woman. Then she clams up.

Christmas is over.

Ornaments and lives have been destroyed.

The Santa bears are not washable.

Happy holidays.
