Evelyn, By Lamp Light

Give her pages blanket soft

with use, with love, worn--

familiar lines still welcome

those dear ones passed, then born--

love treasured, lorn,

stitch plots taken up, then dropped.

  1. I love the pages soft as blankets. This speaks to me of a love of old books and the words they contain. I'm thrilled to see you wrote in the form, which is so elegant in your hands. This piece has a kind of old-fashioned charm, a tenderness reserved for dear friends and poetry.

  2. As usual, a wonderful poem, Shay. The last line especially I wish I wrote.

  3. I can only agree with everyone above, as lovely and warm as an old-fashioned hand-stitched quilt. The parallels between books, and life, hand-craftings and Evelyn quiet but very present.

  6. Very subtle. Very well done. I, too, loved the idea of pages being "blanket soft". Awesome!

  7. I gasped at the dropped stitch after the smoothness of the rest, but it too shall pass. Very moving.

  8. This is lovely, especially the soft pages that feel like blankets. I love it when pages feel so soft, so well-worn and loved........"those dear ones passed, then born." Such a loving poem, Shay.

I do love my books- I can't bare to part with favorite ones. I know this is also about a loved one, and I can think of nothing nicer than a treasured book found and presented as a gift. (or a gift certificate to a used book store)

    So sentimental and soothing.

  10. Pages soft as blanket..that is beautiful. I love old books. I wonder who read them, what libraries they were shelved in..without opening a page my imagination is engaged. This is a beautiful poem Shay!

  12. "Give her pages blanket soft with use, with love, worn" What a perfect description; I can feel it between my fingers as I read.

  13. "stitch plots taken up, then dropped" You know, this really speaks of healing things rather than throwing them away. As a society, we are so bad about creating trash, rarely reusing or fixing things that are broken---books, blankets, appliances, people, relationships.

  14. You've knit a beautifully eloquent piece here, Shay...I just love that you open with this softness and in the end elude to knitting with the "stitch plots taken up, then dropped,"such a great read!

Hey, I wanted to tell you that I was sorry to have missed your prompt last time...I've been hella-sick with the flu and then a cold right after, too....any way b.b.b (blah, blah, blah ;) feeling better but I got way behind around the garden though...I opted to not try n' catch up just hop into the present. Smiles to you!
