Medusa In An Unguarded Moment

I want to talk about the beauty of snakes.
Such a long backbone...
no one is going to fast talk them into a compromise.

Let's talk about the economy of fangs.
Two
will do nicely, thank you.

No hands means no handshakes, no bro pats.
A snake just waits
without ceremony, until you state your damn business.

Snakes don't go to Sandals,
they don't cruise the Mediterranean, hobnobbing with assholes.
They just sun themselves on the nearest rock.

No power suit.
Shed that skin, start over again,
brighter, better, and every inch of it comes from within.

I want to talk about the kindness of snakes.
They kill with an embrace.
They can unhinge their jaws, a practice many people should adopt.

In short, I love snakes.
I keep them in my hair, graceful charmers of every hue.
Don't turn away; love them too.

And look at me when I'm talking to you.
______

This poem is for Fireblossom Friday, where I have asked people to hand me a great big pack of lies. The truth is, I don't like snakes at all, they give me the creeps.

  3. And my own encounter with one was on a rather different note.

A snake just waits without ceremony, until you state your damn business. - couldn't be truer.

I love these lines, and I, personally, have nothing against snakes so long as they stick to their own territory and do not make the mistake of invading mine. Your last line is a very clever reminder of who our narrator is.

  6. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Medusa--and great pic (I used it also a year or so ago I think)--there's something really creepy about it that suits the warped point of view of this poem really well. So much of what we think of as evil, as good, is really, part of our own loved selves, just us..the laundry list of snakely good points is perfect--you may be lying about your love for them, but there's a lot of truth here nonetheless.

  8. i don't like when they surprise me, but otherwise, i think they're beautiful.

Shed that skin, start over again,
brighter, better, and every inch of it comes from within.

  9. Even though you're lying, the voice is still true FB! Aw, what do you have against snakeys, though? Your alter ego would tell you that they make lovely boots and purses!

  14. clever, clever. You are not shy with the whimsy and the swears in this piece, making it the sort of poem I could have over for lasagna and Paul Rudd movies. Your last line here snapped me to attention.

Oh, and snakes can't be as bad as centipedes. viva la

  16. You had me totally convinced that you love snakes. My husband, as a matter of fact, truly does...thus, once again, I will be sharing your blog with him.

    This charmed me!

  17. What a great lie to inspire this poem; snakes freak me out too.

    I love these:
    "such a long backbone"
"Let's talk about the economy of fangs."
Stanzas 3, 5, 6 (yeah, I loved the whole thing really)

But your closing line is the best. :)

  18. P.S. I think "snake" is a personality type, be it male or female. This is of no regard, but I am a snake in the Chinese Zodiac. So you must be collecting me to adorn your hair as well. ;)

  20. Shay, you totally had me going. Isn't it ironic how we are able to embrace an opposite so convincingly? Brill prompt, as mentioned on my blog. Love, Amy
PS Crap, I could have done one on clowns!!!

  21. I was out of town for a couple of days, and missed this. Glad I found it.......I especially love the "unhinging of jaws". Maybe we should do that to politicians during campaign weeks, then we'd have to assess their actions rather than their words.

  22. Shedding skin and unhinging jaws is a wonderful attribute... This is so FUN.
