Recipe

I live
in a tiny house with gingerbread trim.
I live
on molasses cookies
and moonlight falling across my body and my bed.

I come out
to tend my purple night blooms.
I know one song;
I sing it to myself.

I keep seven cats. I sleep until noon.
And always,
I think of nothing, and no one
but you.

  2. I could see myself
    as the protagonist
    of this poem.

As you know, simplicity simply appeals mightily to my simple self

  3. This is so simply sweet. If only life were so peaceful.

I love Catblossom's face! I just LOVE cats. Can't remember a time without them.

  4. To live in such a sweet place, but to harbor such obsessive thoughts. I'm not sure how to feel about this one. Nicely done!

  5. The recipe is for molasses cookies. But the speaker is only telling us how delicious they are, even if eaten alone. As she discreetly folds the worn, stained page into thirds, she recites this poem and places the recipe just beyond our reach and understanding. It is only for her and her "you."

The second stanza is my favorite, but I savored every word several times. It is simple, straightforward, sad, and beautiful.

I love that this could be a poem expressing romantic love, or it could be for a lost grandmother or mother. It is perfectly vague while capturing such lovely details, like the purple night blooms.

  7. Life is good when things are simple. This feels like the quintessential dream state, where everything is molasses slow and sweet, and you can almost hear the cats whispering feline wisdom from the foot of the bed.

  11. I think it's likely her love died long ago (time enough to acquire seven cats). And if she sleeps until noon, she is likely older, perhaps retired. This might be a husband lost at war or sea. Or it could be someone she just wasn't able to be with in the end. But either way, she has found contentment in her simple joys: home, baking, flowers, music, cats, moonlight.

I love that "I live" is used twice. "I live" and "I come out" are central themes here. You have revealed your true self and are possibly alone for it. But nevertheless, you live (whereas before, you did not).

I loved your e-mail; I will write you back later today. Time to get the crew ready for school! Let me know if you need a new list.

  13. Ah, this recipe seems to be receiving mixed reviews. Some would savor the life presented here, some would not. As for me, I would pass on the seven cats.

  16. I want an entire book about this woman. A fanciful and interesting characterization that makes me want to get lost in her world. Great job.

  17. sounds like a tasty place to reside. I'm surprised the cats don't eat you out of house and home (literally).

  18. I can see her singing her one song, thinking her one thought, living her one life. I love the hint of obsession!

  19. I love molasses, but still think this is just too much sugar to believe! Yet, I keep the recipe . . . a favorite.

  22. It's offbeat, but not in a showy or self-congratulatory and intentionally ironic manner. It's charming as opposed to hipster, if that makes any sense.
