Fireblossom's House of Voodoo

Quite some time ago, some of us bloggy poets were asked to show our writing space to the world, on our blogs. I didn't have a camera at the time, but now I do, and though I am woefully late to the party, I still thought that some of you might enjoy seeing Chez Shay.

Once in the door, you would be in my living room, where, when  am not working, I spend most of my time slack-jawed, watching tv or dvds and communing with Bosco, who heartily approves of tv time, as it is usually food time, too.

His Majesty. Isn't he handsome?

Okay, last chance to head back out the door. Note my voodoo dolls hanging on the wall! Oh all right, they are really marionettes.

Bosco cannot believe that you are still reading this.

Here is my desk, where I write all of my poems. It was my father's desk before me, and is older than I am. The green book on the left is my volume of Lorca, a gift from my BFF Hedgewitch. The little brown postcard is my lioness from Kerry, Queen of the Toad Pond. I like my writing space spare, as you can see. My screensaver image is a young Emmylou Harris.

Next to my chair is my music, always within reach. Right now it is loaded with three cd's: Joni Mitchell "Songs To  Seagull", Erin McKeown "Manifestra" and the self-titled "Bryndle", which was a group comprised of Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards, Andrew Gold and Wendy Waldman.

I hope you enjoyed this belated tour. Now I must go serve my Master. Woof!

  2. Ooooooo--the Waterhouse Lady of Shalott! And lots of cool lamps, little lampshades and doo-dads of all sorts! It actually seems very witchy to me, in a good-witch-of-the-west kind of way. His Majesty is looking ultra-handsome and intelligent too, especially for the internet.

Everything looks very warm and comfortable, and the perfect fertile oasis for a broody poet to nest in, if she doesn't mind grotesquely mixed metaphors.

And just so you know I noticed, Chez Shay??? Wasn't that a salsa reggae clog-dancing band?

  3. Wow...dig the "behind the scenes" post! I can envision you pounding out a masterpiece at your desk, two in the morning, a glass of wine nearby, with a manic, inspirational look in your eyes as you compose those lines we love so much. :-)

  8. Thanks for the peek into your world. It helps to picture you there with Bosco, writing. Your space so tidy. It makes me feel ashamed of my hamster nest mess on my desk. It is fun to see where you write. You have all that is needed and have it organized so well. Thanks for sharing your place and the bits and pieces that make it you...so unique and so talented, so intriguing.

  11. Thanks for the invite into your home! I find it very intriguing to peep into another's personal space. I have been looking at your artwork (although I know the Lady of Shallot takes pride of place.)Bosco has oodles of personality, that's for sure. How special to see my postcard on your desk too... That's all the way from Africa!

  12. This is great, Shay. Everything important is at hand, and not buried under piles of magazines, newspapers, bills, and whatnot, like my desk (one my father built for my grandmother, when he was in school).
Bosco is beautiful. I'm sure he wouldn't insist I say "handsome" instead. He doesn't look like he's confused about anything.

  13. A dog or cat at ones feet is always essential for writing poetry, I think. As a book lover, I too surround myself with books. I also love photographs & art ... and music. I think I'd feel right at home at your place - although, I need a comfy chair to sit in at my desk - I was eyeballing some really nice ones as we were shopping for school supplies at Office Max! They were soft, leathery, and raised up and down (my desk chair is currently too low for my desk and typing)

I must have missed the prompt to share our workspace - or I forgot it as it means I have to clean it up. :)

  14. Oh I so loved seeing your cosy space, and darling Bosco. He tilts his head to the side the way Pup did. Adorable. Your Waterhouse is one of my faves. Amazing to think of your wonderful poetry being imagined at that desk. So nice that it is your father's. Thanks, Shay, I so appreciate this look into your home. Now I can picture you there more clearly.
