Calling All Angels

On a night when the moon went dark,
and I spilled unchecked from the broken glass of my life,
from my knees I whispered,
calling all angels
calling all angels
if you can hear me,
send me a sign.

In my hour of no hour left,
in the minutes when the indigo stars scorned my name,
from my knees I whispered,
calling all angels
calling all angels
in my extremity I called to them,
and the angels, in their mercy, came.
________

for my Calling All Angels challenge at Real Toads.

at the lowest point of my alcohol addiction, when I thought I was worth nothing, and that the future held nothing, I prayed. Every day since, that prayer has been answered, and I am astonished and humbly grateful.

  2. Shay, I love this and, especially, your explanation below. I am right there, right now, basically on the floor and whispering Help to whatever gods or angels might be listening. Some days (years) are harder than others. Bless those angels for coming when you needed them. Bless them for keeping coming. I know they arent far away from me, either. Just sometimes it is harder to know that than other times. Loved this poem. You tell it real and that's the way I like it.

  3. As all your poems always are, this one is deeply human, and touches that place where we either find faith to sustain us or die, trust in whatever holds that strength which is outside of us, yet somehow can be brought within. Such a deep darkness, where even stars are indigo...I'm glad you found your angels, and that they sing in everything you write.

  6. Perhaps the subtle shift that happened is that you came to believe that you were worth the angels attention, which is, after all, true. Thank you for sharing your moment of grace when you opened to receive the love you deserve. You are now a source of grace to us.

  7. "in my hour of no hour left..." - so raw, so ingrained with helplessness. Amazing how some angel is willing to be there for anyone who simply asks. I have learnt that lesson. A beautiful, inspiring piece of poetry acknowledging that angels are personal beings unfettered by religions.

  12. "In my hour of no hour left" is brilliant.

    Honest. Raw. And hopeful.

Some of us held onto bottles. And some hold onto their bitterness...

  14. Beautiful, universal, personal ...getting to the point when "I spilled unchecked from the broken glass of my life" is usually what finally brings us to our knees. Thank you for this poem, Shay, thank you for me and everyone who needs to hear forgiveness is due and grace arrives.

  15. Such moments of personal epiphany are rare, and never to be forgotten. I like how your two stanzas are shaped like angel's wings. This was a great challenge, Shay. So many excellent poems have been shared. Mine may never have been written without the inspiration.

  16. Amen. In my darkest cups surrender was the only escape -- the cry for help inside that. Only when everything end could anything begin. Here'e to rebirth and a high-five to your angels. - B
