Ugly Bird

In the night garden,
there are two gates, side by side.
There are twin paths,
doubling back on themselves.
There is one sky,
in shades of indigo.

In the night garden,
there are two trees, leaning each into each.
There are hours,
and minutes within the hours.
There is an ugly bird with a beautiful song.
There are two vines entwined.
There are the distant, lonely stars.

  1. Tears in my eyes, Shay. Nothing that sings this beautifully could ever be ugly. The pain is that no matter how alone we are, we see how everything could be, is meant to be, different...and the asking why never ends, An eloquent little dose of heartbreak that only a song can understand.

  2. Sometimes Life Be's that way.

The lonely rack upon which our moral and sexual bodies are rent... choices. . .

  3. I'm with Hedge - nothing that sings a beautiful song can be anything but beautiful. This is so sad. And so lovely. The night garden with its lonely stars.

  4. What's that saying...ugly is as ugly does? There are other ways of measuring beauty than by outward appearance for sure. A beautifully written poem of melancholy.

  5. I don't think a bird can ever be ugly . . . so beautiful.

  6. Okay, I got something different in this poem. I was fascinated with your phrases, like "two gates side by side," "twin paths doubling back on themselves, and "two trees, leaning each into each. To me, this wasn't sad, it was closeness, even in a night garden

Even the "ugly bird with a beautiful song" makes me feel a sense of balance -- God's way of keeping balance. Well, that's my feeling, anyway.

I thought it was a very hopeful poem and liked it very much:~)

  7. Yin and Yang? Death is easy, living is hard? Loved the imagery, and my heart goes out to the ugly bird with the beautiful song!

  10. I saw in this pairing of things and the distant lonely stars as melancholy but the ugly bird having a beautiful song as a sense of the balance or rightness of things with the twinges of sadness.
