with two teacher friends.
Saw Looking For Mr. Goodbar
in South Bend.
No wonder the country's going to hell.
All the teachers are cruising the bars!
In a Jackson Mississippi Mickey D's
there were elephants on the wall for art.
They're real, said Jim. No, said I.
Jim's grin. In my world, they are.
Crossing a bridge into Louisiana
we saw white cranes circling the marshlands.
The entire Richard Brautigan library across the back seat;
on the tape machine, Jackson Browne & friends.
It was just something to do that summer,
passing the bottle to pass the time.
But now, with all the black coffee blur behind me,
that year still goes down smooth, holds a shine.

for Sunday Muse #176.
I so enjoyed this road trip. Love your ending, "But now, with all the black coffee blur behind me,
ReplyDeletethat year still goes down smooth, holds a shine." Good memories can carry us some rough patches.
Some years, some experiences are like that, full of artifacts to drag out and pull their magic as needed whren the shadows sneak a little too close. Thanks for sharing your road trip, Shay. I needed to get out of town today.
ReplyDeleteP.S. love the title.
DeleteExcellent Shay. Love how the memories change over time.
ReplyDeleteSounds like something to hold onto. I love that last line.
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking us on that trip to Vegas. Some memories like that are forever stored in the attic of our brains. Beautifully recounted!
ReplyDeleteRemembering good times - sounds like a fun roadtrip. A lovely read.
ReplyDeleteLawyers in Love. I think I got the title right. It's not Browne's best, but I do love to blast it on the radio in the car, and bought the CD for just that song.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful poem. So wistful.
I read Trout Fishing in America in (I think) 1969 ... your poetry is giving me major 60s flashbacks. Those epic road (trips) everyone seemed to be taking. Of course I love this!!!
ReplyDeleteNice. And that perfect Jackson Browne. I love the line in the song, "I don't know when that road turned into the road I'm on" because that's how it is for me. How'd I get here? What am I doing living in Oregon?
ReplyDeleteCould not resist .. ‘cause it’s a State full of beauty!
DeleteI LOVE this! And I so know the shine of those long-ago days. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteSmooth as Tennessee whiskey, but better than the song! Concerned that Brautigan and Browne might be dangerous in combination, like you shouldn't drive while on that s*t., right?
ReplyDeleteI love how you captured more than just a road trip; you brilliantly captured the impact it carries for you now. That last line is wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this with us,Shay.A journey to remember.
ReplyDeleteAh, always good to share those memories sweet like good wine and at the same time bitter like good coffee
ReplyDeleteGood Sunday. Luv that you let us eavesdrop on your conversation with Jim
much❤love
Road trip flashbacks! Totally not dancing in the chair. :)
ReplyDeleteNiee shiny shine
ReplyDelete"on the tape machine, Jackson Browne & friends."
ReplyDeletethere's not a bad song on that entire album. this was fun to to read shay
Excellent Shay. Keep that shine my friend. Fine tune! 😉
ReplyDeleteLovely, Shay, lots of memories here. Passing the wine bottles, two,
ReplyDeletearound the room. Finding a Louisiana BF, a lot is real in my world.
..
You hold a shine with your words, Shay. Love the mention of Jackson Brown and
ReplyDeleteRicard Brautigan - brings back memories.
