Greenhouse Afternoon

There should be a bible for things like this--
something dependable
something I could grab onto
when I feel bewildered,
   dizzy,
from your smile and your scent
when you stand closer
   than I expect.

Such a bible would have shed its
shall-nots
in favor of
more love-thy-neighbor
   especially
when the sky is full of soft stars
and you remove my glasses
   along with my reserve.

This bible would be full of watercolors
and nested in by drowsy birds.
This bible would be
   lit like a greenhouse afternoon
or suggested in midnight indigo.
Lay hands on my shyness
and let me lay my burden down--
turn me to the text of oh-gosh-yes
   like a prodigal
whose lips can finally confess.

  1. I love the gentle meditation in your wonderful poem - Like gazing and dreaming and hoping in a place of growth - Jae

  2. I am not much for the Holy Scripture normally, but this is one bible I would be happy to keep by my bedside. Delicate as a butterfly's wing-flutter, but strong as a stormy wind, each simile and image hits exactly the right note of wistful remembrance and holds all the sweetness of what lives on in our dreams, untouched by age. Beautiful writing, Shay.

  3. Oh we both wrote "soft stars". I love this version of a Bible, "nested in by drowsy birds" (!!!) and "lit like a greenhouse afternoon." Just gorgeous. Wonderful closing lines. A heartlift of a poem.

  6. Shay, your poem is so tender, honest and sensual. "lay hands on my shyness and let me lay my burden down' ~ emotional intimacy at its finest.

  7. This has that subtle touch but is so rich and layered. Your love and desire poems are out of this world, and yet so down to it. Oh so beautifully expressed. If you take requests, I'd say, more please.
