just a little one
but still.
it had activities--
recreational
illicit
volcanic.
from a promontory above one of its seas,
I pondered what to do with a drunken sailor
early in the morning.
I had to rent out my little planet
due to the commute.
Years passed.
When I returned and saw
what the renters had done,
I brought the flood in my righteous anger.
Things are better now,
lo these many months gone by.
I have a koi pond with native goldfish.
I sleep in until lazy o'clock
or until the stars wheel above my gingerbread cottage.
The sailor got sober, survived the flood,
and sings, "Weigh-hay and up she rises"
when I stir
both my happy ass,
and the coffee he has kindly fixed
the way he knows I like it.
I have a planet,
just a little one
but still.

Wonderful! It would be idyllic to have one's own small planet. One could invite whoever one wanted and could live freely and happily. And a koi pond sounds great!
ReplyDeleteI love the circularity and shape of your shanty, Shay, and the durability of that little planet, despite the renters. So glad the sailor got sober ad fixed coffee.
ReplyDeleteI love this SO MUCH!!!!! It is delightful as only you could write it. I love the opening and closing couplets. Renters can be so tiresome. Love the "Things are better now"..........and sleeping in till lazy o'clock. This was a delight to read.
ReplyDeleteMay we all have a island/shanty to leave from and to return to! I'm listening to the music now, quite compelling. I'm glad the sailor survived the years and provides the music and coffee. The koi pond "with native goldfish" is wonderful, too. This is a poem to whistle all the way home.
