Sea Change

I was a gatherer of rhythms and tides,
weaving the unspoken into every wing.

I knew the language of the high grass, and was wife to the Sun--
I was opened and lined with light;
in return, I bore the whole green world from within myself.

I gave everything to the flow of currents,
until I was nearly erased, a shore-stone smoothed and smaller.

I let myself lie in the curve of the lunar crescent, then;
I became a kind of egg; a cocoon.

See how I am now gathered and spread, myself,
on a loom of silvered night-water--

Sea-changed, I kiss only the Moon.
I am both mother and child, a surface rising.

I embody what some have called betrayal,
but what I know is just the cello-round within me, humming.

  6. This is my new favorite of your poems. I was already in love before the best couplet ever:
    "I embody what some have called betrayal,
    but what I know is just the cello-round within me, humming."

    "Sea-changed" after giving birth to the fertile land, silk woven on the loom, she is always emerging. Beautiful! The couplets make perfect sense since she is always twin.

  8. The goddess speaks here in your voice, and her own. The images as always vital and subtle, full of color and darkness. You know I seldom quote, but this was just amazing:

    "...I was opened and lined with light..."

  17. This poem is spectacular. The second stanza incorporates everything I associate with the feminine deity. What I found most remarkable about the piece is the vibrancy of the voice - it contains self-awareness, caution, melancholy and harmony. Every image is a feast for the intellect, and the whole an intuitive journey.

  18. Your gentleness of touch in this piece, the wide expanse of value this piece portrays the Woman, as a child, a daughter, a sister, a mother. It allows me to reflect upon the strength, the warmth the inspiration my mother 'gave' to me.
    As a single parent with nine children, she unselflshly loved. In her passing and in reflection I am in awe of her ability to be selfless. On this month of the International Woman, I salute my 'mamasita' and all of you ladies. If only more men, in general, could acquire some of your traits their would be a greater balance in our world

    Gracias mi amigas

    Beautiful piece.
