Fingerpaints

Afterward,
Simple with joy,

I have the urge to draw a sea shore
On the skin of your hip
With fingerpaints;

But you touch my wrist
And two birds stay together in the nest,
Playing moon to the tides
Of love in you.

  3. When I was fourteen or so, my mother took us to see South Pacific. It's very geared to the simplicity/purity of a fourteen year old's desires. There's a silly song in it called Bali Hai, about an island that might not be real calling you to itself, blue, mysterious, full of what you need to quench your thirst and make you whole, if you can just get there. However hokey, the song imprinted in my adolescent brain, and it gave me the same feeling of joy, longing and mystery I see so much more refined and cleanly expressed here. A beautiful, musical, love poem.
