Pretty

I used to want to be pretty, like a Mucha girl--
Got the Lancome landfill to prove it.
But now,
I just don't care--
I'm as nasty as a shut-off notice;
I don't even try.
I don't care if you look, and go blind.

I used to want to be somebody's Star, their Number One--
But now that shit is done.
I'm as lonesome as a broken step--
Don't even try,
Because I definitely bite, hard and deep,
And for little cause.
I'm the un-Mucha girl--
Part rage, part grief, all claws.

  1. 'Lonesome as a broken step' not even good enough to be stepped on any more! GAH! This is heart rending, Shay, and damn fine writing. (And there's not much as nasty as a shut off notice, of whatever kind.)

  2. Dear Shay, You are not writing as much as channeling the private tapes of my soul and transcribing them. I'd ask you to knock it off, but it's damned entertaining and somewhat therapeutic.

Permit me to say this without irony or undue sentimentality: You know I don't know what you look like, but I do know you are beautiful.

    Much love, el Mosk

  7. I too love the "Lancome landfill."

("Paint It Black" is one of my favorite Stones songs. I've never heard Vanessa Carlton's cover. Thanks. I enjoyed it.)

  9. And unapologetic into the bargain! And why not? We should all own who we are, and others learn to take it for better or worse.

  10. Love "Paint It Black." This is wonderfully in your face. It's a sad commentary that "trying" means putting on make-up, though. Just promise me that you shower occasionally!

  12. "Part rage, part grief, all claws".......great writing, Shay. And I LOVE (and echo) what Mosk says, above: you are beautiful. And you write like no one else on the planet.

  19. Lancome landfill....lol. This had some edges that were hard to hold on to. But you still hold on for dear life while your fingers start bleeding because its magic. I would pay for your magic show with blood any day. Great prompt by the way.

  24. I've felt like this. Turned off and turned in. Left wondering what all that care and worry over physicality was all about. Now divorced, I'm back powdering my nose. "Oh", that's what its all about.
