Orleans
Note: the Cherry Road deli first appeared in my poem Creatures Of The Sea.
On Cherry Road, near Catalpa,
Is a little deli.
Joan of Arc leads her horse inside and down the narrow space between the counter and tables;
He is white and magnificent.
His hooves are loud on the tiled floor, his eyes large and brown, and he snuffles and tosses his head once
As if to say,
Yes,
I am beautiful in my blue blanket with the gold fleurs-de-lis,
A fine steed for knight or saint.
Joan of Arc herself is tired and wounded, but her gentleness with her mount never fails,
And it hurts her to tie him up out back
Near the dumpsters.
When she comes back in, the Pretty Girls having lunch there say,
Look at her,
That haircut.
Those clothes.
She smells.
Omg.
Joan of Arc cannot read the menu.
She pauses uncertainly, and the Pretty Girls giggle, just loud enough to make sure she hears.
Rod McKuen, the famous poet, owns the deli and he smiles as if he were a love poem himself;
When she hesitates, he suggests the roast beef on French loaf.
Certain breads
(he says)
Rejuvenate the soul.
Certain cheeses
(he continues)
Revive flagging spirits.
He points to each one as if touching the well-loved skin of a long-time partner,
Describing each
In gentle words that would make the hardest churchman weep.
The Pretty Girls are scandalized.
Open-mouthed, they look back and forth to each other.
He's talking to her.
Horse chick.
With the weird hair.
Omg.
Joan of Arc sheds holy tears.
Her wounded shoulder bleeds.
The drops fall to the glass of the deli case and form shapes--
St. Michael.
St. Margaret.
St. Catherine.
Rod McKuen fixes her a sandwich with the same reverence he would use in composing verse,
Then slides it on a plate across to her
Along with a cherry Coke
As if it were the Host.
He adds an apple
"For your friend."
The Pretty Girls all get up and leave,
Their matching shoes and handbags from London making them look just like
A defeated army
In astonished retreat.

You Had Time
One of my favorite songs combined with one of my favorite movies: Ani Difranco's "You Had Time" and the movie "Lost & Delirious."
They're both about following your heart, which I swear by doing...right into a brick wall sometimes. But I always wonder what's on the other side. Maybe what I'm looking for. Maybe not.
"One minute there was road beneath us and the next, only sky."
I hope you enjoy the video.

A Wedding In Detroit
"I bring bricks together," her father liked to joke,
And indeed he did,
Baking them in an oven like bread--
But instead of loaves rising,
There were buildings instead--
And streets laid red and endless under boots, wheels and hooves.
He was a practical man and made a practical match for his only girl.
Everyone agreed he had a gift for picturing how things would fit together,
And he had built a world solid sturdy and strong--
She was never one who would say her father was ever mistaken or wrong,
And so she
Stole a moment to say her regrets to her real love,
A downstairs maid named Brigit--
Then got into the carriage
And smiled resolute and odd all through the jolting ride
Down the hard bricks
To the house of God.

Bullshit
Nothing is ever as it seems.
The Chinese people downstairs are like big jolly panda babies--
When I come in in the evening,
Bones gone rubbery and my heart growling like a fighting dog inside my chest,
They smile, ladling benign ancient blessings over me like pork gravy.
I become a biscuit,
The white girl smiling back, calling them honey and darlin just as if they came from
Alabama and not Shanghai.
Then,
They go in, draw the curtains, and speak rapidly to each other in dialect while waving kitchen knives,
While I
Let myself in upstairs, take off my absurdly heavy parka,
And put the newly arrived bills under the chipped jade Buddha paperweight an old girlfriend gave me.
That was in ancient times when love seemed possible
And the old Polish couple still lived below,
Boiling their cabbage,
Never hearing the rude jokes we made at their expense
In between kisses
And lapping up
The ridiculous, absurd shit we told each other,
Like, "No matter what, I will always love you,"
And
"Wherever we live,
Wherever we are,
As long as we are,
I'm happy."

Because I Can
Darlings, it's me, Babs St. Argent, from the late great Objets D'art blog. I've taken the liberty of commandeering Word Garden this morning because...well, for the same reason I do anything, because I can! There are certain sights I just go mad for, you know. One of them would be Mabel Van Deusen with her arm in a sling, gazing tearfully out at the tennis court as I leave the new pro all tied in knots and making puppydog eyes at me as I reel him in. Not that I want him. I just love to see Mabel suffer!
Oh, now you think I'm a monster. Lambs, I'm as soft and tender-hearted as they come. *titter*
What's that, Cherubs? Why have I come all the way from Pompano Beach just to slum it at Word Garden? Well, because! It seems that Fireblossom has gone into some sort of lesbian fugue after seeing this picture of Emmylou Harris at some blog devoted to same. She mumbled something about Lydia having told her about it. All well and good until she saw THIS picture, began to hyperventilate the way I do when I call the 800 number on the back of my credit cards just to hear the recorded voice say "no limit", and fainted dead away in a heap on her cheap Berber carpet.
Fireblossom, tiresome as she is, did manage to croak out something that, miraculously, wasn't about Ellen or anything immoral, before she passed out. She said that nobody is as cute as Emmylou. Except one. Even with her glasses.

Mission
On a dead planet with nine moons
I said,
This cannot stand.
This will never do.
He said,
Is it the constant storms?
Is it the greenless wastes where nothing ever grew?
I said no dear,
Not that, dear...
It's you.
Nine moons around my head
Nine pentagrams around my bed
Can't watch or pray
The devil away
Because,
Because,
I keep her close and my hatred fed.
The lightning flashes and strikes at last
And all this sand is turned to glass--
It cuts me
And splits me
Now I think
It may be
That there are ten of me
Or ten thousand,
Ten million,
And each with its own little coal black heart--
Never to forgive you.
Never to part.
