Once & Again

jealous jealous jealous
of how she looks, that face, those ways--
gah! the perfect woman.
but wait a minute,
she survived divorce, like i did.
she survived old-school parents, like I did.
she still believes in love, believes in following her heart
and her instincts, just as i do.
she even dresses like I do.
Maybe I am a little bit of remarkable...too.

I don't know that this is really a poem, but it is my response to Isadora Gruye's Out Of Standard challenge. She asked all of us over at Real Toads, to do the "Cliff's Notes" version of our favorite book or movie or such as that.  I love the old tv series "Once & Again", in which Sela Ward plays Lily Manning, a divorced mom of two who finds love the second time around with architect Rick Samler. Life is never smooth for her, but she finds her way and keeps her heart right there on her sleeve, and shows a lot of courage and soul. Besides that, she's fricking gorgeous.

Sela Ward also played the character of Teddy on the old nighttime soap opera "Sisters." As a black sheep and a recovering person, as her character (eventually) was, that role meant a lot to me, too, even though "Sisters" was never very realistic, and "Once & Again" is.

  1. I've not had the opportunity to watch this series (guess it never made it to SA) but I like the way you have described the main character - she sounds like a woman to respect. I'm all for credible female protagonists.

  3. Yes, like Kerry, never watched, but I often think this is why a character resonates with us--it shows us parts of ourself that are worthy of more respect than we tend o give them. She has a really warm smile.

  5. I inhaled both series ... I remember 'Once and Again' came to an end shortly before (single mom) I gathered up my mother from her little house in Missouri, brought her to live with my son and me in Florida. I loved 'Sisters' (I'm one of three) ~~ they lived in Illinois ~ my birth state. How's that for memory?

  6. I LOVED Once and Again (haven't fought about this show in a long time) and mourned its cancellation. I also loved Sisters. Thanks for the poem and happy memory.

  9. Grandmother Mary just said what I would have said, so I'll have to say it loudly and with emphasis...you ARE remarkable, and yes, she is gorgeous. But she isn't you, so she's missing out on being a talented, fabulous poet.

  13. I like Sela Ward, but more the Fugitive. I kind of prefer mysteries, but this series sounds interesting.

Did you ever really, really doubt you were remarkable? I haven't.

  14. Yes, you are - more than remarkable! If the world was just you would be a very very famous poet!

  15. You? A little bit remarkable, Shay? That's like saying the sun is just a little bright. You're amazing and don't every forget it. (Stripey says that's an order!)

  16. I loved Sisters....I use to watch it on Saturday nights when I was younger. Remember Ashley Judd in that show? And Swoosie Kurtz. I haven't see once and again, but maybe I will check it out!

What I like about your Cliffs Notes version is that it introduces me to the character and the narrator, now my world is two fold as rich!!! Well done and viva la

  17. This, my friend, is your daily epiphany. They'll be more like it, but not all will be as uplifting and emboldening.

Shoot...I guess this comment is an epiphany too...and now I'm a bit depressed.
