Fairy Palace

In early morning's misty cradle,
where the banshees pace and tear their hair,
hidden by green in the Toad Queen's bower
I awaited no other's kiss for fair.

I slew the crone who had worked the spell,
shed my skin and shook out my hair...
behold my Palace risen from Hell,
and cross at my pleasure the blood-pinked stair.

  1. I love the tight rhyme, and the whole second stanza ought to be chanted while walking windershins around a deserted and profaned chapel. This is not your Mama's fairy palace.

Oh, and *nothing* says kiss my butt like a chain link bikini and a claymore.

  2. Oh Wow, Shay! How apt is your name? That is so cool. And these two stanzas seem to me to be just the beginning of a tale told in ballad form... She escapes from the Toad Queen's Tower, having shed the green skin and bloodied the stairs, but what happens next?

  3. Awesome, Shay. Have you ever read any of Angela Carter's books? She was a magnificent, original writer and some of your writing reminds me of hers.

    Here's a good site about her: http://www.themodernword.com/scriptorium/carter.html
