Stephen Miller Meets Adolph Hitler on the Tarmac at a Tesla Dealership

Ask the man
falling from a high building
whether gravity is a matter of opinion.
The ground will be
explaining things
shortly.

There are those,
bedecked with self-awarded
ribbons, who sculpt
with a hammer
and operate (on others only)
with a saw
and call it Vision.

Sipping from
half-filled goblets
gilded with a fur of mold,
their soapy smiles house parrot tongues,
moonstruck by
a slug in wolf's clothing.

Crows laugh
at windmills, and
nobody is eating the pets.
Fearful shills leave poisoned sugar out for each other
and force feed it to everyone
but no hourglass
fills upward.

Ask the man
falling from a high building
whether gravity is a matter of opinion.
The ground will be
explaining things
with impactful clarity
presently.

Famous Contemporary Poet

I'm trying to finish this famous contemporary poet's
fourth collection, which groans under the weight of
all the glowing blurbs on the back cover.

The famous contemporary poet avoids rhyme as if
it was a downed wire--half grand mal seizure, half
pit bull off the chain and charging.

The famous contemporary poet writes a few poems,
carefully packed in vignettes, snapshots, and musings,
all the excelsior found in any packing crate.

In high school I had an acquaintance, this guy.
He'd toss out something cryptic and then wait
like he'd flipped you a Rubik's Cube.

Everything out of his mouth was a test and he'd give
you this bright smirk, like can you figure it out and
get to where I am, up here?

I would like to meet the famous contemporary poet
and show her one of mine, plain as the flat of my hand
when it breaks her nose and the blood comes.

I am trying to finish the famous contemporary poet's
fourth collection even though it's like watching a movie
with muddy sound, in dialect, no captions.

Your Heart

Now, after the fact, like a glitterbomb coroner,
I want to have another look at your heart.
My microscope went blind last time--
I squeezed it too hard, like a sponge when I'm angry-cleaning.
I was too fascinated, sappy,
needful as a driver in a wreck.

Bring me an ambulance in the shape of a spyglass.
I want to find my own ghost.

I thought your bones were made from hard cane,
your hair caramelized smoke.
I wore a white coat (as if I knew something),
glasses made from willow switches, and a half moon smile.
Relax, I told you, but it was me in the coma.

Now--please hold still for once. These worms aren't good,
like the plastic model I saw at the vet's. Your heart,
like the plastic kitchen I used to play with,
practicing to be a fly that would bite you one day.
Eat my attention, it's good for you.

Each worm burrowed there is something I said,
some of which I meant--the rest was practice for a role.
Let me pull one out like a string, pull it and it speaks this poem,
a pretty wasp with a stinger where the truth pools.

I am too harsh, I know. I am the laundress who bleaches everything,
a maniac for killing the invisible baddies, a hospital candy striper
performing unauthorized tests that do nothing, or at least,
don't cure or induce any useful fevers.
I have your results. I'll bring them down to the morgue where my
hand awaits its conclusions as if they were a ring or a nail.

Summation:

they weren't worms,
just paper streamers.

I infected you
but it made you better for a while.

the microscope cannot be repaired.
my report needs to be presented in a recognized language.

i'm sorry, truly, if i hurt you
that was never my intention.

this poem is not written in my true voice.

i was never your babe.

that was never your heart.

The Hawk

By a fence line in the damp green of the morning
a hawk by gifted vision caught a wren.
There underneath his claws she learned the sense behind the laws
and she'll never by the fence line sing again.

In the evening by the fence line lay her feathers
which I gathered up to weave a tiny dress.
Stars said, "No, it cannot fit," but I whispered love to it
and by daylight I stood head to toe in yes.

By the fence line in the damp green of the morning
I made from apple wood a mandolin
to play the hawk a tune, oh aren't you pretty as the moon
and at his touch I felt the answer sinking in.

October

These early evenings, the sun sinks slowly,
like a 'do-ragged painter down spider-leg scaffolding.
We are all weary these days
as the world rolls beneath us and we logwalk,
our eventual fall following beside us like an unpredictable dog.

Then quietly, as crickets guard the evening filigree,
your ghost comes to me
where I smoke in the Adirondack
under the weak-sister yellow moon of the outside light,
to portend a storm that's already passed and gone.

In a canning jar, under the basement stairs,
I have kept your hoodoo,
that sacrifice chant-dance made of woodsmoke and razor grass
that you wove to your bones
to make me love you as if you were food, as if you were solid earth.

Whether in Butte or Chicago, Pushmataha County
or Devil's Hand, it makes no difference.
Even the ocean is not shatterproof, so my bags drowse in the attic,
with old costumes and dressmaker's dummies
that you went to while I slept off the soft poison of your words.

I know why you're here.
I know why yellowjacks have stingers
and I can't write these poems forever just to stave you off.
You'll use the knife I gave you as a pick
and play some stupid banjo breakdown at my funeral

as if it were spring, as if you were sane, as if I didn't matter.

Ash

Ash is blind and boneless, but flies.
Colored flames flare the leaf that dies.
For a moment, the madman lucid.
Sweet milk in the sun turns putrid.

The bonfire kills the thing it lights.
Ash is blind and boneless, but flies.
You may find that devils may care
To catch and keep you with them there.

The young may sigh, slow, and sicken
to find their tongues gray and thickened.
Ash is blind and boneless, but flies.
A snare denies its bird the skies.

Don't be so proud, sure and boasting.
See the rooster, plucked and roasting.
The grave may loose the one who dies.
Ash is blind and boneless, but flies.

A Fool In Love Is Soon Made Wise

Vase so shapely upon the shelf
holding so lightly within herself
the finest faces all gathered to her
which start to bore and bother and blur
until she meets the one who moves her,
beckoning her come quickly closer
to fall so hard and tumble o'er
to spread her shards upon the floor.
