Stephen Miller Meets Adolph Hitler on the Tarmac at a Tesla Dealership

Ask the man
falling from a high building
whether gravity is a matter of opinion.
The ground will be
explaining things
shortly.

There are those,
bedecked with self-awarded
ribbons, who sculpt
with a hammer
and operate (on others only)
with a saw
and call it Vision.

Sipping from
half-filled goblets
gilded with a fur of mold,
their soapy smiles house parrot tongues,
moonstruck by
a slug in wolf's clothing.

Crows laugh
at windmills, and
nobody is eating the pets.
Fearful shills leave poisoned sugar out for each other
and force feed it to everyone
but no hourglass
fills upward.

Ask the man
falling from a high building
whether gravity is a matter of opinion.
The ground will be
explaining things
with impactful clarity
presently.

Super callous fragile mystic evangelistic hope chest

Today's sermon is up on its hind legs, begging.
Today's sermon is gonna cut you while you're singing.
Today's sermon is demanding, like an overdue bill.
Today's sermon wheedles through its nose--
today's sermon sleeps with your husband
giving him (and you) a raging dose.

Today's sermon stands astride mighty mountains
and tunnels underneath your secret sins.
Today's sermon may be placed in a vase of water
or morph into a chia pet that ends as it begins.
Today's sermon don't care.
Today's sermon is always there,
watching you fuck up from thin air.

Today's sermon was born in a humble stable.
Today's sermon jacks the roast right off your table.
Today's sermon cracks wise and has glitter-ball eyes.
Today's sermon can bust a move and run a real dope enterprise.
Come close for the sermon I speak.
Come quickly--I ain't got all week.
Come in, douse the lights, go ahead and wet your beak.

Today's sermon can be delivered right to your door.
Use the easy autopayments that continue evermore.
Today's sermon comes on quick to raise the dead.
Today's sermon comes factory-sealed like I said.
Today's sermon can rhyme if it so choose.
Today's sermon says heads I win, tails you lose.
Eat today's sermon in big chunks until you're dead.

Today's sermon means nobody any harm--
is safe as milk, sweet as candy, warm as toast.
Today's sermon wraps itself around your heart
and leaves its mark on every motherfuckin' part.
Today's sermon is lit
Today's sermon is it.
Today's sermon isn't over--you'd damn well better sit.

The Dark Bird

Behold the dark bird,

new as a fresh injury
old as antiquity

spreading its wings
bespangled with collected eyes.

Millions cheer the dark bird.
empty sockets over their grins

like twin red suns
over a planted scythe.

Behold the dark bird
in all its majesty and power,

its feathers tipped with blades
and blades are most of what it is,

wounding all, even itself.
All hail the dark bird

whose spread tail obscures
the east, its head devouring the rest.

Kneel to the dark bird
and behold in its bones

your own grave.

Un Recuerdo (A Memory)

When I was younger, one of my co-workers
was an older lady, or so she seemed to me.
She was just always there,
a woman who ate at her desk from a clear plastic container--
some sort of salad.
She was just an ample,
stationary emplacement
as permanent as the pyramids.

I thought of her then as something akin
to those funky American clunker cars from the fifties
still rumbling around Havana,
something you'd smile at
but not feel had anything to do with you.
She wore a cross that rested on her bosom,
like the ones that dangle from the mirrors of Cuban taxis.

She stopped coming to work, though, and someone said she was ill.
"Pancreatic cancer" they told me, sotto voce.
I knew, as a northerner, that weather can change in an instant.
What I hadn't known is that I am made of weather
blood and bone and breath
breezing through me every second of every day.

I went to see her with some other women from work.
There, in the hospice, she wasn't ample anymore,
just a paper doll watching episodes on tv through a narcotic blizzard.
British adventurers were removing treasures from the tombs
in grainy archive footage
as the knot inside her belly grew and her hand grabbed at nothing.
"Morphine hallucinations," someone whispered.

After she died I took one of her cats, a calico I had for several years.
I still think of that day at the hospice, though
and how the clown-devil can sit silently at one's side any time,
like a taxi at the curb, bags already arranged in the trunk.

He will watch whatever you want to watch,
at that wind-down hour.
He never complains, talks over the narrator, or changes the channel,
but though we protest that we were only in the middle,
I want to see how it ends
he will click it to black, pull into traffic, and say,
"Nada es para siempre, ni siquiera sufrimiento."

My Question For The Unabomber

 I asked the Unabomber
if he had ever been in love.

You know--before Montana--
before wandering the unforgiving winter woods
holding a frozen tulip
and a rolled-up poem
nestled inside a pipe as if you were a minstrel.

I asked him
if anyone had ever inhabited
the slow-cooking smoker
of his heart.
Was there ever the very emblem
of desirability
in the formula of anyone's eyes?

In your Harvard classes
full of second-week quitters
and callow
nattering plebes
was there never any elevated romantic
who might have solved for the
impossible equation
of your isolation and your need?

Oh Teddy,
you coward,
you murderous nutjob,
if the one whose heart could have stopped you
were to speak at last to your wobbling soul,
could you still be fixed
even now,
or are you already damned?

Perhaps my question itself
is like postage on a parcel
that can carry your remainder
softly out of shame
or suddenly into Hell?

Lilac One

I saw the devil standing in front of Lilac One
with the dawn across his shoulders
and his shirt cuffs undone
He said, "Why are you waiting, and who waits for you?"
then the dawn turned to diamonds
of peculiar blue.

The devil is lonely though he prowls Lilac Two
and his heart is a magpie
in a mirror that flew
with itself to itself in a blur of time spent
in evening's cold courtyard
by feigned accident.

The devil said, "Nothing can mar Lilac Three
though tomorrow's black roses
are vased there for thee."
Then he shook his hair out like leaving a love
that he's carefully carved--
that's a lot to think of.

Buck Moonskull, Private Eye

 Buck Moonskull, private eye

slugs down a spring water, heaves his hooves up on his desk, and coolly sizes up his client.

What a dame.

Big "who, me?" brown eyes behind long lashes and a come-hither look. Buck laid odds they'd be sharing a salt lick before this case was over.

"Jane Doe," she said when he asked her name.

"Sure, dollface." Did she think he was born yesterday? Why, it had to have been three years ago now. He watched a blush creep up that perfect face.

"I--" she began.

"Stow it, Toots," said Buck Moonskull, a little sharply. He didn't like being played with.

"I know who you are. I'm not the kind of flatfoot who can't see the forest for the trees." Buck picked up a cheap plastic folder and waved it. "Does the name Bambi mean anything to you, doll?"

"Where did you--"

"You're his mother. Don't bother to deny it. Oh sure, that faked death scheme paid off when Stag Antlersen copped the insurance money. I'm on to you sister."

A sly smile played around the edges of her kissable lips as she drew the .22 and purred, "So. You found out about Stag." She raised an eyebrow. "You're good, dear. But not good enough." She raised the gun and, as fast as a landlord on rent day, Buck Moonskull dipped his rack and knocked it away with a practiced swipe of a his 8 points.

"I must have been crazy to try to con a con," stammered Ms. Doe.

"Lunacy," said Buck Moonskull as a gold halo of light shone above his head, like tacky foil on the neck of a bottle of drug store champagne. He picked up the black rotary phone from his desk and, gesturing with it, asked, "Do you want to come clean to Bambi, or do I put him straight myself?"

Jane Doe sighed, crossed her legs provocatively, and reached for the phone. In the middle of the dialer it said "Buck Moonskull. CLOverfield 5-2999." Watching her, he had a feeling that number would be ringing again soon.

Youth & Age

I met a woman with hands made of ice,
she said you're burning
with fever,
poor thing.
She gave me a bible, some old wedding rice
and a bell
too tarnished
to ring.

She said, child, you come like a saint with a gun
to bless me
or kill me
with cures.
I stood there and called up the moon with my prayers,
fed it honey,
then gave it
to her.

Don't give me your pity, it's you who need mine
said this woman who cracked
when she smiled.
Then the moon called me back and erased all I'd done
and the woman said
don't you see,
child?
The woman said
don't you see,
child?

Marry Me When I'm Dead

Marry me when I'm dead,
with bloom-eyes of aster sockets.

Accept me as your fleshless bride in degrees of white,
your rock-bound toad with the sand-grit kiss
always emptying, dear--
betray me--I won't care.

Marry me when I'm dead,
and consider:

Asters are named for the stars they resemble,
which, similarly, require no air.

Summer

What's with the weather, anyway?
If I wanted to live in some sweltering buggy outpost,
I would wear a pith helmet and talk nonsense about rare beetles;
do you see me doing those things?
Doesn't National Geographic handle all that?

I have caught myself in a few rare moves lately, though, I admit.
I blame it on losing sleep.
I never know anymore whether I will put a sachet in the guest room drawers,
a bag of dog poop,
or one of Muffin's dead mice.

Behold the end of the world, when fey devils employ a single match
to devour, with light, all that is, and then almost delicately,
throw the bar,
lock the latch.

Signs of The End are everywhere, not just the tv weather.
Have you seen Trudi Beauty Queen lately?
She's about the size of a zeppelin, and isn't even blonde anymore.
All day, she screams at the help in German,
while stuffing eclairs into her mouth like shells into field artillery.

I think, if it would snow, my chi would center and I could be my usual self again.
Instead, I have to wear sunglasses so huge that I look like a Mars probe,
and I can't see a blessed thing, sidewalk from six-lane,
Trudi from a tarantula,
Greek yogurt from green tea facial mask.

Perdition arrives on the arm of Despair, in evening's early gloaming
announced and feted, by Chinese lantern light,
to faces slack,
and ashy white.

I think I'll throw on a caftan, hire some sherpas to carry the tea cakes,
and go visit Bitsy Henderson, to have her administer a test,
running her finger back and forth in front of my eyes.
She'll tell me, if I'm a little off,
and whip out her planner to tell me that summer isn't forever--

only alimony, crow's feet, and naturally, us.

Duckburg U.S.A.

Doesn't every American burb have a bright red satanic-looking goat at the intersection? No? Well we do!

Giant PEZ dispenser, maybe? Gateway to Hell? Wildly ill-conceived petting zoo? Who knows?!

Devils

There are devils--
never doubt it.

They are in the details,
and they lounge on the brass cross-piece at the foot of your bed
all through your decumbiture.

Decarnate devils fuck with your read outs
and your precious little decastich.
This little devil screwed the meter.
This little devil scotched the poem.
This little devil cried we we we
will goose you at your desk
at our will
and all the way home.

Here's your désobligeante
with a devil on the box beneath the moon.
Here's your digitorium
with a devil to call the tune.

Forget what you've been fed
about doromanic deities.
All there is is devils,
all over,
all in,
all red.

Die now. Why not?
The devil gonna getcha anyway.
Maybe tomorrow.
More likely today.

But what about redemptive grace?
What about angels?
Oh, grow up.
To shelter?
To save?
The devil you say.
