Sneakers

I dreamed I was young again
which seemed natural
(and woke up old again
which did not.)

I had on kicks that looked as if
they'd been left out in the rain,
buried in a mud slide
and chewed up by wild dogs.

Does a life get old, too?
When is the last day of school?
When do all these teachers
lose their love of lessons?

I dreamed I was looking
for new blindingly white shoes
to make my feet like new brides
puppies fresh as fabled loves.

I woke up gimpy, slow, sore.
A shining soul misplaced
in this beat-up box of a body.
It must be keen for a new ride.

I dreamed I was young again
but woke up old
without possibility of parole
except by the sleep that cures and mends.

Music: Grace Potter, I Shall Be Released

Process notes: I did dream last night that I was young again and wearing completely worn-out sneakers from long travels. I had it in mind to buy new, spiffy, blindingly white ones that day as I had another journey ahead.
Some years back, I had a dream in which I was vividly, pointedly, and emphatically told that April 17th would be my day to step across into the light. However, there was nothing about what year. And so, every spring I get a little nervous. In fat, I was seriously scared the first time around, but the day has come and gone several times now and like Elton John, I'm still standing. For the first time, I'm sanguine about the day approaching. If this is the year, I'm okay with that.

Night Work

The earth is flat
there, where the lily of the valley grows
beneath my window.

Some wandering cat
or creature made sleepy by the dawn, chose
to rest there on the stems bent low.

It's crop circle night work
left by visitors
that were.

Marbled Blue

In a garden on the gray side of a dream I can't remember
Crows with beaks of marbled blue strut coolly to defend their
Claim upon what's yours and mine abandoned on a leaf's edge
With signature in red and gold on dawn's black-winged assemblage.

Hates Haiku , Flies Solo

This is the sort of thing that has those bitches snickering behind their hands--
I burned the bed, including the one in my mind,

but I took one of them outside first,
so I'm not as rash as they say.

I have shelves and shelves of poetry--
my own and everybody else's.
"My love is like a red, red rose," like this, and like that,

What a load of crap.

Now I sleep on the couch, in case there's suddenly something good on,
or I feel like steeping myself in a trash novel all night
like some sort of nocturnal tea bag.

I'm always brewing something.

So fuck you, you with the soft lips; you with the strong arms.
Here's the list, you're on it, get lost.

At 3 a.m. there was a show about dinosaurs.
They had shrimpy brains and big spikes and some had clubs on their tails.
Half of them were girls, all they cared about was
laying eggs and eating.
I watched that shit until the sun came up.

My friend says, "You could still meet somebody."
It's true, I could.
Here I am flying through space with my big bright tail.
Here I fly, with my shitty track record and my poems and my passion.
Here I come, down through the atmosphere,
not looking for you, but on my way anyway.
