out on the lawn.
The sun is out at last.
A robin is playing short fielder.
Tyrone belts one
way out to the divots where
Rita dug in her heels
screaming, fighting Tyrone,
who knew to leave the shiv in or she'd bleed out.
She did it to herself.
Today was fun, but
we missed Rita, who couldn't come.

"the flowers bloom like madness in the spring" --Jenny Anderson
"No matter how hard the winter, regardless how bumbling they were the year before, come April we always thought our team would be in the thick of it. With the ice melted and everybody 0-0, just the crack of the bat was enough to make the hardest of us believe that our hearts would not be broken this time, and that a benevolent God surely loved the Cubs, just as we did." --Jeanette Prolsky

(i wondered about the spelling on cruellest). :)
ReplyDeletei like how you always put us in another world for a moment.
I almost used this song for mine! Some rather foul plays out there in the outfield, but you win some, you lose some. Maybe Rita will be back next year. Of course April means de base-a-ball to you, world's foremost Tiger fan. I have heard some people do love the Cubs, but I'm thinkin, not quite as much as Ms. Prolsky. ;_)
ReplyDeleteYour spring softball slightly more dangerous than mine ever was. Poor Rita. I can guess what happened.
ReplyDeleteApril has long spoken to me. I chose her for my own from the box of stripper names fit for our marquee on my first sex industry job. . . .

that shiv is powerful.
ReplyDeleteOh, so the Cubs are a baseball team? ;)
ReplyDeleteI have this S & G album, and I love this song. Thanks for putting it a click away...
There is nothing like the crack of a bat to herald spring. I like your cast but I'm a Tiger's fan myself.
ReplyDeleteBaseball! Why didn't I think of that?
ReplyDeleteHey, I take umbrage with that tattoo poem. My birthday is in April, so it's obviously the bestest month out of the whole year! ;-)
ReplyDeletebelts, divots, shivs, bleed out? Say what?
ReplyDeleteI understood the first stanza :)
I probably shouldn't giggle but my dark side finds humor in this...Nothing like softball game with divots and shivs..:)
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is a long story. I came to your site and was about to respond to this post when BAM...I got inspired and did my own April 66.
ReplyDeleteIt's not up to this post, which makes me laugh each time I read it. I love your dark humor. Thank goodness for it...
Have a great weekend, Shay:~)
