Mexican Poet

You lay the Mexican poet down between us
on the fading blue moon and stars of our overwashed sheets.
You told me, open as a new bottle of wine,
how you loved him,
how he wrapped his words around your heart
like a morning glory vine around a nested stinger.

I should have listened to the skinny about bi women--
they will always leave you twice.
There is a reason why
sun and moon rarely share the sky,
and when they do, it is always in half-light--
that darling of killers, clergy, and affected stand-in bullshitters.

I know it was just a book,
just a moment,
just translated soul settling inside our skins,
turning them to sandpaper.
The real blame belongs with my jar of hoarded scorpions,
scattered in our hair,
blooms on two brittle garlands lovely in any language
but never meant to last the night.

  1. I am happy to read that you are inspired by Huerta's language ~

The sun and moon rarely do share the sky, each one wanting to be the "star" ~ The jar of hoarded scorpions is menacing imagery ~ Have a good weekend Shay ~

  4. Bittersweet, with an aftertaste of honey and cyanide. There are those who are only faithful to their own firefly desires, and in my opinion, scorpions are too good for them.

  6. Where to start? So many fantastic lines. The morning glory around the nested stinger, and "translated soul settling inside our skin" for starters. Fantastic, Shay.

Your figurative language has a unique beauty of its own and there is a wealth of wisdom in your poetry.

  10. A jar of scorpions in your hair sounds like quite a problem indeed. It is easy to let the mind become poisoned by raw emotion because a lot of the time we just feel the need of wanting. Lies surround those who are naive enough to let their guard down, but then again who really knows who is naive.

  13. Ha. (In a non-ha way.) The opening here is especially powerful I thought--the way that someone can use a kind of intellectual bridge as a bar of sorts-- just a weird type of thing that you have captured terribly well here. The whole thing is very human and vivid and captivating though. Thanks. k. (Manicddaily)

"open as a new bottle of wine"
"I should have listened to the skinny about bi women--

"and when they do, it is always in half-light--
    that darling of killers"
"The real blame belongs with my jar of hoarded scorpions,
scattered in our hair" (Where do you come up with this stuff?!)

    You are a star.
