Shape-Shifter
See the pretty bells of the Foxglove
All along the garden path
Where I once reached for you
As if I were
Some stupid but beautiful hummingbird.
Now,
I curl around the stalks of the Foxglove
As if each one were a caduceus.
Darling,
See the Sabi Star, the Daphne, and the Suicide Tree.
See them and come back;
Come back to me.
I have tea--
Yellow Jessamine.
White Snakeroot.
Mountain Laurel.
Don't tell me that it's over.
I wait in the shadows of the Foxglove
Like the garden cat
You picked up, stroked, and stole.
My feelings haven't changed; they continue intense...
No matter what, believe that I'm still your girl.
Have a care, come to me, any time at all.
Your hummingbird waits,
Deep in the blur and beating
Of her impossible breathless wings.

no wonder you are my favorite living poetess, Shay
Warm Aloha from Waikiki :)
Comfort Spiral
"Impossible breathless wings..." Chica, this is a beautiful romantic tragedy...and it better not be about HER. It's too good for *her.* F'get about "her!" ;)
ReplyDeletePS - Off topic...Did you know there's a lesbian bar in Miami named "Scratch?"
I have lived this more than once, great metaphor, great poem
ReplyDeleteThat darn garden cat! ;-)
ReplyDeleteWow, this was so REAL! I liked it! And that stupid hummingbird...or wait, we all act that way sometimes, don't we!
I'm not sure how to interpret your poem, Shay. (beyond saying it's amazing) The references are profound and weave a tapestry of myth and numerous visions—though I think the emotion in the lines trump the allusions, or illusions. Also, just saw the comment you left me. thank you sincerely, I often doubt if my words "hit home" Grateful for what you said :)
ReplyDeleteFireblossom...
ReplyDeleteHaven't I read this before?
*I have a Great Memory for all things Shay?
*I have just experianced Deja Vu...AGAIN?
*I'm just a tottering Old Geezer?
Whatever....
We may banter publicly.
But You Absolutely know how much I respect you.
And how I REALLY feel about you...
I have the pictures to prove it.
Loved this Shay.....G
Stealing cats...that's quite a feat. And stealing hearts should be punishable by law...

I really don't know if it's love that keep the hopes alive, or the other way around... whatever it is, they stay alive!!!
