The cat who ate Minnesota
Made a sandwich from both the Dakotas,
Then started in on Wisconsin
From room service at the Algonquin.
This naughty cat
Proceeded to bat
Iowa into Wyoming;
Then ate Missouri
In quite a hurry
After a careful de-boning.
Milwaukee was next to go down the hatch
But she kindly avoided Chicago;
Hats off to a kitty who understands
What to eat and what not to.
Her thirst she did slake
With several Great Lakes
And for afters, a bit of Ohio;
Come back later this week
When she's liable to sneak
A large chunk of Athens and Cairo.

ReplyDeleteJust poking around through the One Shot Wednesday poems and came upon your piece. Awesomely enjoyable poem. I love the way you manipulate imagery to clarify the message of the poem. Thanks for submitting and keep writing.
ReplyDeletecrb.
this was so much fun to read! Very clever too. Hey, are you sure you haven't my mischievous cat??
ReplyDeleteI like this so much, whimsical, clever, and well written - great one shot!
ReplyDeleteI see you (too) have a most excellent cat with quite a healthy appetite. Eating his way through America you'd think he was watching Guy Fieri's Drive-ins, Diners & Dives. What does he drive a corvette? --a cat taking Route 66 heading West. I love it! Gay (@beachanny)
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting for my cat to come in from her prowlings.
ReplyDeleteStripey is on his way to guard the border because he says no one but him is allowed to feast on Canada!
ReplyDeleteLoved it, Shay! Had me giggling!
Funny-Funny! And I'm glad to know what NOT to eat--Chicago...
ReplyDeleteExcellent "One Shot"
Hi Shay. LOL the cat seems set on eating America. hilarious
ReplyDeleteSounds like something Earl Grey would attempt...
ReplyDeleteCute, clever, cat-true.
ReplyDeleteHilarious Shay...can i borrow this cat why does it make me think of Garfield haha :)
ReplyDeleteHilarious! I will have to read this one to my daughter. :) R
ReplyDeleteReminded me of the Hurricane Katarina... Liked reading the way you painted the path of destruction... was it about the same...

Oh, I have two cats who eat like that, or it feels like. Very clever and entertaining.
ReplyDeleteShashi, you can't possibly be serious.
ReplyDeleteI was enjoying the poetry and the phonetics of cat reminded me of KAT. Just twisted it to see some reaction to it.. ofcourse, I was kidding...;-)

Oh good - no southeast eating yet. We'll be on the lookout. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a lot of fun. Love and Light, Sender
ReplyDeletesounds like a cat i know...
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed!
ReplyDeleteode to un-punctuated verses
Clever, witty poem, cats can be like that though, or so it seems with my tow kitties -- who the dog gives them a wide berth, for he is wondering if he will be dessert.
ReplyDeleteFun, one stop,

ReplyDeletebeautiful spirits,
stunning sentiments.
oh wow - love it - and i'm glad she kindly avoided Chicago..because i have never been there and it's a place i still want to visit...
ReplyDeletethis was such fun to read and re-read and re-read again ...
ReplyDeleteI had a dg once that ate the entire history of Europe... I damn near failed that class. You try telling a teacher "My dog ate my book", see what happens
ReplyDeleteWell, if the kitty drank enough water from the Great Lakes, invasive species (as well as the native ones) won't be a problem for Michigan anymore.
ReplyDeleteLOL.. what a cat! :D hahaha! does she have a name, Fireblossom?
ReplyDeleteMy One Shot
Hello, Kitty! I understand a cat has needs. And so you needed a few states to fill up on. Don't let anyone tell you that your needs or hungers are too much. I do thank you for avoiding Chicago. So thoughtful of you. It is my hunch that Athens, Greece would taste better than Athens, Georgia.
ReplyDeleteLOVE this. LOVE the way your mind works. And I LOVE that the first thing I read this morning was your comment and it made me laugh. Thank you, lovely you, for being my friend!
xoxo
Brilliant writing, my friend! This is one I could read over and over as it puts a smile on my face.
ReplyDeleteYou rule, chica! No doubt.
ReplyDeleteKitty is smart to avoid chicago
ReplyDeleteIt's rotten

I have a finicky bunch
I'm glad she left Chicago -- even if live in eaten-up Missouri. Nice one.
ReplyDeletekeeping out of New England I see...

ReplyDeleteHah!! That's one helluva clever cat, Shay!! But then they were always known to be the cleverer of the lot! Wish we were too! :)
ReplyDeleteNeat One Shot !
This must be the cat rumored to travel with Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox! Very clever and cute.
ReplyDeleteTeresa
I love a funny poem now and then, and this just hit the spot, Shay. Like chocolate and caramel sauce, one can enjoy only so much gooey love before it begins to cloy.
ReplyDeleteShay - you always know how to the paint the town. Well in this case have the town eaten.
ReplyDeletemoon giggles
Thanks for the One Shot my friend
Oh I do hope she spared Frances MacDormand when she took out Minnesota.
ReplyDelete#5 ... Missouri and Minnesota, I won't miss living in either. Go Kitty!
