If You Love A Tiger
If you love a tiger,
Accept her temper as you do her pleasure--
Learn her body with your own, by night and day the same.
If you adore a tiger,
Though you long to kiss her claws, resist the urge--
Warm her through like afternoon, keep her wet with evening rain.
There is always some witless goatherd--
Feed his poisons to his ugly wife,
Switch his bullets out for bindis.
There are always other tigers out to find her--
Change the seasons to confuse them,
Paint the moon with oil of linseed.
If your dreams are full of tiger,
Be the mangroves for her shelter--
Memorize her yellow eyes, forget the way you came.

Oh my God, I so love this! Especially "paint the moon with oil of linseed" - how do you THINK of these things??!! I adore "be the mangroves for her shelter" and "memorize her yellow eyes." Beautiful, romantic, it is to sigh. The tiger's claws may be sharp, but dimly.........way far back when only vegetation ruled the earth, I vaguely remember the terror and thrill of being so attracted to the danger.
ReplyDelete"forget the way you came" - chilling and mysterious.
ReplyDeletePleasure and temper seem linked somehow :).
ReplyDeleteWonderful. I like how you've varied upper and lower case in the body of the poem (your font--it's easier to read now :) ).
Have a wonderful, pleasure-filled day.
Hard avoiding the witless goatherd, unless, of course you have those tiger senses. I feel like I've just read one of those guides to some forgotten back country--"Don't forget to take water. Fill out the form at the ranger station so we know if you don't come back in three days...wear a hat...don't feed the tigers.."
ReplyDeleteDanger and beauty, what a powerful attractant it is.
I especially like the mangroves...
Just dont turn your back .. or pull her tail
ReplyDeleteDo you ever tire of me telling you how amazing you are? Another delightful poem. I love 'Warm her through like afternoon, keep her wet with evening rain.'

Moonie hugs
I've loved a few tigers myself. And my bitten and clawed heart tells me to be a lot more careful in the future. A fine poem!
ReplyDeleteSadly, so many fall for a tiger, but secretly hope they can turn them into a kitten.
ReplyDeleteLoved this, Shay. Chock full of wisdom.
Still giggling over the witless goatherd! Here kitty, kitty...
ReplyDeleteAhh, "forget the way you came..."
ReplyDeleteThat's perfect.
